I'm sorry if it warranted it's own thread, but I was just curious.

I've been hearing reports that updating normally with a9lh installed can potentially brick your 3DS. Has this happened to anyone at all or is there some kind of merit to that?

It bricks only if you have a N3DS AND a CFW that doesn't block FIRM0 and FIRM1 overwrites. (In case of an O3DS it just removes A9LH.)

Whenever an update comes out there will always be a lot of people here posting on the status of updating if stuff broke or not. So its better to check forums first when a new update comes out.

Definitely. Everything Nintendo puts out isn't exactly going to be exactly compatible. It could always mess with everything.

If the CFW you running doesn't have FIRM0/1 protection, then updating will brick your system. As of right now, ever single with the exception of RXTools, has FIRM0/1 protection. So it should always be safe to update well running AuReiNAND, ReiNAND, CakesFW, and Mizuki, as all of them have FIRM0/1 protection.

Oh so it's not both of them? I thought Aureinand patches both 0 and 1. Also for future reference, are the firms patched all the time?
I meant it was the first cfw to offer the blocking. If you use updated sysnand mode its always blocked. You can turn on the force a9l detection so say you load it from some other thing(like hbl) it will still have the firm blocks in place.

Ahh ok. That makes sense. So let's say you don't have updatedsysnand checked, and for some reason you hold L and get into sysnand and update through there. Are they still patched at that point?

I'm not sure tbh. I shit she said that if it boots from the a9lh bin it has the patches all the time but I could be wrong. That's why there is an option to force a9lh detection so if you boot from something other than the .bin it still blocks it

Wait, is there a build of rxTools that works with A9LH?

Ok. That's what I meant by "all the time", but I see that there is something put in place for that. Tbh, I never actually knew what the "Force A9LH detection" flag actually meant, so thanks for clearing that up for me.

Yeah, though it can't load the firmware properly the first time using a9lh (you'll have to use another entry point the first time) and it doesn't block firm0/1. If you want you can checkout the arm9loaderhax of the git source and build it yourself.

Wow, I can't believe I've never even heard of that...oh well!

I know people like rxtools but it really is time to let it die. Especially with a9lh. There are much better cfw out there

EDIT: I agree. Although, in its prime, rxTools was unparalleled!
