I'm about to help a friend to downgrade two n3DSes one at 10.1 and the other at 10.2. I've seen some chatters about lack of success (or even bricks) from not going from 10.3 to 9.2. Can I get some confirmation from people who have downgraded: is it better to upgrade to 10.3 first, then downgrade to 9.2? Or does it even matter if I downgrade directly from 10.1/10.2 to 9.2?

IMO, there is no difference downgrading from 10.1/10.2/10.3. I honestly have no idea why people who have "half downgraded", update their 3DS to 10.3 only to downgrade again.

I don't know the true answer to that, but even if it was better to be on 10.3 I don't think you really have a choice anyway unless you already had a 10.3 NAND backup to begin with, which can't really be done with public methods besides installing a hardmod.

In theory upgrading is safer than downgrading.

If I am not mistaken, 10.2 and 10.3 use the same Firm. 10.1 is different though.

There have supposedly been reports of more success on 10.3, but it seems quite abstract from what I've read. I've downgraded 5 systems all successful without even a softbrick, only 1 of them were on 10.3, others were on 9.9 and 9.5.

O3DS seems better supported with all firmware to downgrade. N3DS however is different beast. Many reports issues downgrading from <10.2

Alright, I downgraded mine from 9.9 at least and only had the standard issue of SysUpdater not launching until a few tries (don't know if that issue still exists with SafeSysUpdater) and apart from that no issues, complete downgrade etc.

I downgraded 2 systems from 10.3 > 9.2 using SafeSysupdater, no softbricks in the way.
Only 2 hardbricks
1.0

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Any updates to share?
Seriously though if you are below 10.4 and want to downgrade, just do it. Get your update pack from that iso site, put the updates folder on your SD root and use SafeSysUpdater's check files feature, if it's green, you go right ahead and downgrade with no worries! :D

One thing I've heard is that downgrading your console while you have the system update nag leaves you at a higher risk of semibricking since the latest update is preloaded on your NAND. So going into recovery mode and saying no to the update to clear out any preloaded update content might be a good thing to do before you downgrade.
