yes as the eshop is not region free and a US 3ds will have acces to US region eshop or vice versa.

What does that even mean? Can you give me an example?
Let's say you have a US 3DS and tried to play the JP retail cartridge of Pokemon X. It would work, but attempting to play online would redirect you to the eShop in order to update the game. However, the eShop is region locked. You would be redirected to the US eShop and that only contains the patch for the US game, not the JP one, so you would be unable to download the correct patch.

Most patches or "updates" for games are independent of region. Months ago I tested the Taiwanese rom of Mario Kart 7 in my American 3DS, and the 1.1 update appeared on the screen.

Even if that is true, (I'm not saying it's not true, mind you) the main reason for wanting region free in the first case would be to get games that never make it to your region or take a very long time, and patches for those games won't be available on your region's eShop for obvious reasons.

So has anyone had a chance to test this with the new hex edit to the launcher.dat file? I am looking into buying Monster Hunter 4, but it would be pointless to buy it if I can't download the patch needed to play online.

I didn't know there was a patch for MH4. Sorry, but those who want to play online with that game are out of luck.

with this game specifically, the patch might work from the us shop anyway? hmm worth a try

your account is online, so it won't be deleted

i am just guessing here, but i presume its along the lines of...gateway patches 3ds to accept lets say carts with the chip id of XXX, but standard games are XYZ, this just patches XXX, back to XYZ, but leaves the region patching in place that gateway has in gateway mode

(note this might be a load of poop, but its kinda how its working maybe not technically correct)

EmuNAND has always worked without the Red Cart, you just need a ds mode cart (blue cart) to run the mset hack installer, the red cart is just the "warez" cart

The red cards sole purpose is to run roms, at least the blue cart has more than 1 function

Wait wait... Sorry if this has been answered, but does this could allow me to play online with the original cart?

Yes. But this is not related at all. Playing retail carts on emunand already has online features working. My guess.. Retail carts probably have some serial number which is why roms can't play online yet.
