Well, would be better to call it the wireless switch, so people don't get confused and ask "why do i need internet to use local play". If you want to maintain local play w/ a Gateway, it's best to delete all internet connection settings and disable Spotpass (so it won't automatically connect to open networks).
Before someone says "Wi-Fi stands for wireless", it doesn't -- it stands for nothing, actually.
Products that are based on IEEE 802.11 includes the 3DS and how it communicates wirelessly, including StreetPass and local play, so "Wi-Fi switch" is perfectly apt. I do believe Nintendo refer to it as "wireless switch", though.The Wi-Fi Alliance, the organization that owns the Wi-Fi (registered trademark) term specifically defines Wi-Fi as any "wireless local area network (WLAN) products that are based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11 standards."
