Have there ever been any attempts to create this kind of mods? So that it would be theoretically possible to play, for example, Diablo 2 (online only) and Towerfall (single device multiplayer) using local wireless.

You can use ldn_mitm, this should be perfect for your purpose. It's a Switch homebrew tool that redirects local wireless over networks.

This is a great project! But I want quite the opposite -- to convert other types of multiplayer to local wireless.

What about implementing some universal homebrew method to sync RAM, controller state, etc. between two Switches to make single-screen multiplayer games playable via local wireless? Of course, both users would have to use identical versions of a given game.

I think that Dolphin is doing something like that for its netplay functionality, or is it only technically possible for emulation in this case?
