Hi all. Long time reader and first time poster here.

I read over on another site that the Wii to Wii U system transfer will transfer all game saves irrespective of region. Most interestingly, the user reported that the game saves were displayed with the correct names. I've found, when running Japanese games on my PAL Wii, that my PAL Wii does not support Japanese characters.

Therefore, I'm hesitantly optimistic that the Wii U's Wii Mode is region-free. Does anyone have an out-of-region (original) Wii game that they can test in their Wii U?

If so, does it work? Do results vary if you already have a save file for that game on your system (via system transfer)? And, just in case, does the old disc-swap trick work for Wii games in Wii U mode?

Thanks!

(For the record, I'm interested because I have a lot of original NTSC-U games, and my copy of Brawl is NTSC-U. If I had a PAL Brawl, I'd simply Smash Stack --> Gecko OS --> play my NTSC-U games.)

I wish to know if the Smashstack > GeckoOS > region free wii game works also.
I get my Wii U next friday but I do not have any NTSC Wii games, Ebay will help me and then I'll help you. hahaha

Just to be clear, I'm talking 100% original games only and do not plan on hacking Wii U for piracy.

I have Japanese Tales of Graces disc that does not work. Might as well try GeckoOS... I wouldn't hold your breath though.

It sounds like he was surprised to see it work with no issues. N might have done the best thing for us, allowed out of region on the wii :)

I'm still alittle confused, so out of region wii games work without geckoOS?
What? No. If it's something that wouldn't work on a regular Wii it's not likely to work on the WiiU's version of a Wii. What I was surprised about was GeckoOS working with no problems. I thought perhaps they'd change something that would prevent it from working, but it does in fact work.

Any homebrew that doesn't rely on using a patched IOS or any of the prior IOS exploits should work just fine. Also, while the Wii blocks games based on region, you can put saves from any region on it just fine, so I would assume they would system transfer just fine. If they didn't, you could always copy them to SD and then to the Wii U vWii (unless they are copy protected).

Well I get my USA Wii U on Tues/Wed so I will try PAL games from Wii on it and then let you guys know.

If PAL on NTSC works then NTSC on PAL should.

SmashStack > WiiXplorer > Gecko OS > Region Free Wii Games = Profit haha

My only question is since I've been out of the Wii scene for a long time (For obvious reasons) is, is there any fixed SBB discs that ST doesn't work on?

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I never knew about it at the time but a fixed version was available but you had to mail in your broken copy lol

So that version is semi rare
