Well, I say "hacked." The only "hacky" part about it is rooting the device, and that's hardly a hack any more.
I didn't even know that NoRefresh thing was a thing, I thought the flashing was inherent in the hardware.

The games seem to run a bit slower, which is okay since that seems to offset the low refresh rate of the screen. All in all, it's pretty interesting.
[Sean] wrote in to share the project with us. [...] He uses Free PlayStation Emulator (FPSE) to run the games. There is an Android version which provides the touch-screen controls you see above. We figured the graphics would be awful, but the video proves us wrong. Other than being in black and white we think the graphics are fantastic. Just one hack was necessary to make this happen. [Sean] uses NoRefresh to keep the Nook from refreshing the screen which is what causes the film-negative type of flashing after several page turns.
