Popular MOBA game League of Legends has certainly left a legacy on competitive gaming. However, this legacy may be a bit darker today, as the top two League of Legends teams have been disqualified from the Major League Gaming tournament.
The two teams, Curse NA and Team Dignitas, were disqualified for fixing the game with one team throwing it. The two teams would then split the prize money 50-50. However, this dastardly duo was found out and instead will receive no prizes of any sort. A statement from MLG reads:
"MLG regrets to announce that we will not be awarding 1st or 2nd Place finishes for the Summer Championship League of Legends Event. We have determined that there was collusion between the two final teams, Curse NA and Team Dignitas. This is in clear violation of both the letter and spirit of MLG's Official Pro Circuit Conduct Rules: 'competitors may not intentionally Forfeit a Game or conspire to manipulate Rankings or Brackets.
As such, both teams have been disqualified, and no placements or prize money will be awarded."
This would be one of the few recorded cases of game fixing in competitive gaming. However, cheating in competitive games is as old as time itself, and to see it creep over to the video game scene is surely expected.
