So I'm using wiisixtyfour's modded betas of WiiSX/Wii64 launched from The Homebrew Channel to play PSX/N64 games, with all relevant paths and files on a WD Elements 1 TB external. Everything about my softmodded Wii and the apps within are up-to-date as far as I know, and it's a from-launch console. I don't have many physical problems with the Wii (it plays games, even dual-layered, just fine, but won't recognize GameCube disks anymore for unknown reasons). Both emulators are in their default (from installation) settings and I have all necessary files (i.e. proper regional BIOS) for WiiSX as far as I can tell. They load games fine but the framerates are significantly laggy, or the engine slows in general (or arbitrarily speeds up past normal), with loads of flickering and sound issues. I'm not sure how to isolate what the cause of this problem is because I don't have a lot of know-how in these matters. To be clear, I'm not inventing a problem out of unreasonable expections. I recognize emulation can't be perfect. But I'm encountering issues that are more severe than footage I've seen of people running games on their Wii on these emulators on YouTube or elsewhere, which leads me to believe it is a legitimate problem from something on my end.

Does anyone with more experience in these matters have any possible suggestions for what might be causing this? Something I've overlooked either in settings, proper files, improper versions of anything, improper IOSes, anything? It's hard for me to narrow down to any single possibility without the knowledge of what makes all this tick. Could it be as simple as my Wii being in too poor condition to sustain these emulators compared to other peoples'? There's nothing overtly wrong with it I can tell, but with a seven-year old console the possibility's there, not that I would be familiar with the demands of these emulators in relation to the condition of the Wii console either way.

Any input would be appreciated. To be clear, I've not had these issues with any other emulator, but then, those are emulating less complex consoles.

So I take it I should be inferring this was and will continue to be one long-ass "month"?

To be honest it's really hard to say when it will actually be out. The only words emukidid (the main programmer for Wii64) said recently on the Wii64 thread from his forum was "keep waiting (no sarcasm)" . Whether that means this month, next month or next year, it's really hard to say. It's been a very long time since the last official release.

Correct. A never ending one at best.
If/when it does get released, I'll be satisfied, but until I see its release, I'll remain a skeptic. It's vaporware IMHO;)

For WiiSX, make sure to always set dithering to NONE. This setting is not auto saved unfortunately, same with the custom button configs. However it only takes 2 seconds to fix in the menu. As for the second issue, use classic controller.
Anyways, i get 60 fps in games like Ridge Racer Type 4, V Rally 2, Exhumed etc so i really like this emu.

As for Wii64, make sure to use Not64 and check the Wii64 thread for a list of games and suggestions. It is a very good emu.

Switching to Not64 solved the bulk of my issues. I'm getting weird control problems that don't gel with my input configuration (which are default), though, specifically with the Classic Controller. A GameCube one works fine, so it's not some huge deal, I'm just curious. As an example, using the Classic Controller, in Kirby 64 just pressing right on the d-pad after swallowing any enemy/stealing an ability makes Kirby remove the power and throw it upward. The only input I have bound to right on the Classic's D-pad is right on the N64 controller's d-pad, but it's acting like I have multiple inputs bound to the same button. Any clue what might be causing this?

I'll also try the WiiSX mod linked and switching dithering to NONE as suggested and see how that goes.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
