As someone who started with gen 1 and played all the way through, I can safely say gen 1 was really pretty terrible compared to later entries. The plot is bare bones, you play inventory management puzzles, and the game never tells you what any of the moves do. Gen 2 was an improvement over that, and gen 3 was an improvement over that, and so on. Each gen builds off the other mechanically, so the question is what do you want out of the series? Because you'll have to relearn things for each new generation, so that's something that should be considered if starting with an older game. Honestly, while I enjoyed each game in the series, I don't see a reason to play the older games for other than for the story, as gameplay wise, the latest generation has always been the best option.

you clearly don't know what you're saying, kid.
GBA era was shit. it was a reboot of the series, with firered and leafgreen being released as replacements for red and green (blue in the USA). the first remakes. oh sure, they're in color and let you catch a few more pokemon. but you know what? the generation before was clearly superior in all other aspects. what you lose in graphics you make up for in the ability to use your mind to imagine something. you don't get that with the newer releases.

if it wasn't for Gen 1 and Gen 2, pokemon wouldn't even exist.

anyway, I wouldn't expect a forum full of pimply teenagers to know what the fuck I'm talking about because there is clearly a generation gap at play, so excuse me while I go enjoy a real pokemon game instead of the crap that came out for the advance.

i got pokemon red the year it came out from a secondhand shop and i still think it's aged like absolute shit

there's no real reason not to pick up OR/AS or X/Y at this point

edit: the only reason to play anything before those is for nostalgia's sake

My recommendation would be soul silver or heart gold. The reasoning is simple: you don't want to get overwhelmed with too many pokemon and pokemon types. So I'd recommend either gold or silver as those had 251 pokemon. An amount that can easily be managed as opposed to the 700+ in ORAS. Plus, GA have a nice end game after you beat the top 4 with 8 new gyms in a whole new area to discover. HG/SS are nice remakes with enhanced graphics and game play elements, and at the same time are not too bare bones compared to R/G/B/Y or FR/LG.

The only non hacked mainline pokemon games I've played were red, and incomplete playthrough of fire red and gold. I'd tell you to play the gold remake simply because I enjoyed gold the most out of my limited experience with the main games.

Play Pokemon Gold first, trust me, for your first Pokemon game it HAS to be Gold. I'll be happy to help you on Skype or in a PM if you ever get stuck.

If you're the type can finish the main storyline in 10 hours (i cleared faster than that in third Gen),

FRLG -> HGSS -> BW -> B2W2 -> XY

And if by then Pokemon Sun/Moon still isn't out yet,

Slowly play ORAS, maybe even Nuzlocke it

U missed alot! Pokemon Red and Yellow where awesome, I enjoyed them so much.
The Love I have for 1gen games has more to do with my childhood then gameplay.

I would recommend 2nd gen: Crystal.

I agree with this. D/P/Pt is best skipped. Weakest gen IMO.
FR/LG might be best skipped too. It hasn't aged very well.

The only thing I liked, probably was
the climatic scene on mount coronet, and going to reverse world.
That's sadly, something a YouTube video can fill one in.
Going to the three lakes was interesting too.

It was rare for the game to have multiple things going on (each rival went to stop on, was it ? Or was that the manga, I forgot)

I've played hours of Pokemon. Every game, even the remakes, are amazing. You clearly aren't one of the huge Pokemon fans, but saying sh*t opinions such as yours should be considered a crime.

The best pokémon games are pokémon heartgold and soulsilver. The only pokémon games with 2 regions

more like one region and a crippled one.

i'd say, play crystal on an emulator to appreciate the roots, then play either of the 3ds games if you enjoyed yourself.
no reason to play godawfully slow ds titles

I always found pokemon boring.
Don't kill me...
Why would we kill you? You're already dead inside.

Jokes aside, no one has to enjoy pokemon. Just like any other franchise there could be reasons you simply don't enjoy it. I for example do not like the Halo series at all, everyone else seems to love it.

Seriously? I´ve never played D/P/Pt, but it was my favorite season of the show (also has my favorite Champion). I wish Nintendo made a remake from this too so I could finally play it...
