Gaming Where to start with Pokemon?

I'd recommend to play them in this order:

Fire Red/Leaf Green -> Heartgold/Soulsilver -> Platinum -> Black/White -> Black2/White2 -> XY -> ORAS

That way you'll have a propper way of feeling the evolution trough the series and you'll get to know the full universe of 3DS. You also will get to play first 1st gen and 2nd gen, so you'll have a somewhat similar first experience to what we who played since the start.

Start with either Blue, Red, Yellow, Firered or leafgreen(Which are Remakes of the 1st Gen)
Or with Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald or ORAS (which are the Remake of Ruby and Sapphire)
And play Heartgold or Soulsilver after you played Firered or Leafgreen, because it has the Region from that game in it and you will see all the progression the world made in some years.

Just play the latest non-remake.

So, X or Y. There's literally no reason to start on an earlier gen. Pokemon is basically just a sports game, every game they just update the mechanics and graphics a bit. Sometimes do a roster update. So X and Y is your best bet.

Yellow (all starters ) -> Crystal -> Emerald -> Platinum -> Black/White -> Black2/White2 -> X/Y -> ΩR/αS (well post game legendaries )

Normally the list would be "FR/LG -> HG/SS -> ΩR/αS -> Platinum -> dunno about gen 5 so no opinion here -> X/Y"
but Crystal and Emerald are really great games and everyone should play them.
I feel that it wouldn't be right if after playing with gen 3 graphics you went back to gen 2 and i think there would be a smoother transaction
to "update" the graphics, plus you could get spoiled by ΩR/αS graphics and find the rest of the games a bit boring.

I have played every game. I have talked with looooots of Pokémon fans since 2007 on IRC. I haven't made a post "judging" anyone else apart from this guy. My original post in this thread was about the correct way, IMHO, to play the games.

To add to my recommendation of starting with Gen 2, Gen 4 must follow (or Gen 1's FireRed). Gen 4 was such a great gen. Biggest overworld of any Pokemon game until Black.

Do it in this order:
Gen 1 - Red or Blue
Gen 2 - Crystal
Gen 3 - Emerald
Gen 4 - Platinum
Gen 5 - Pokemon Black or White
Gen 5 - Pokemon Black2 or White2
Gen 6 - Pokemon X or Y

I mean if you want, this was how I did it growing up (although I own all of the games).

Yeah, it was mind boggling to me as a kid as well. You just tell your Pokemon what to do and, depending on the accuracy of the move, either hope they don't miss or just wait for it to hit guaranteed.

Back in gen 2, my first Pokemon game, the attack "leer" looked like two laser beams, so I thought it was an actual attack and would keep using it until I quickly learned that it only lowers defense.

Basically yes, you will keep trading attacks with your opponent until the HP of one of you reaches 0.

The complexity comes in stats: Speed will define who gets to attack first, while your damage will be calculated based on your attack or sp. attack (depending of which kind of attack you are using). Evasion is also a thing, since there are attacks that reduce enemy´s accuracy or raise your own evasion. There are also a lot of negative conditions that you can suffer during a battle like Poison or Paralysis.

I´m just giving the general idea here, because I think it´s more fun to see for yourself.

EDIT: there are also type advantages, some types are stronger over others (like Water>Fire) but you probably know this since they explain at the start of the game, I think(?)

Actually, GSC also have 2 regions.

Learn the type of every pokemon then learn the type chart. I did this as a child through testing xD

you get used to what attack does what but yeah . . . that's the basics of battle
it (obviously will get a little more in depth later . . . but not too much so) there are lots of charts and and stats online at serebii.net that may help if you need for instance a list of pokemon you can only get in fire red (vs leaf green)
