I've got a switch on 3.0.2. I've put a 64gb sd card in and am getting a message about updating in order to format. I can't spot it in the change-logs in which version this feature was added. Does anybody know please?

Solution
The SDXC update is a separate update from the firmware one, BUT, when you update to get the SDXC update you also update to the most new firmware, meaning, taht if you where on 2.0 on the moment on which that was the newer firmware, put the sdxc and get the update, you whould get the update on 2.0, but if you get it now, it will update your firmware to the lastest.

That said, there is a way to obtain the SDXC update whitout updating your firmware, there are 2 tutorials: here and here

Everything said, if you format your sd to FAT32, you can use your sd card whitout the SDXC update, but if you want to use exFAT, update all or follow one of the two tutorials

Remember: SDXC update is separed from firmware update...

And that you can get the SDXC update whitout updating whit the tutorials i linked.

Hmm just a thought.. Can you insert an SD Card into an already updated to the latest firmware Nintendo Switch and have the SDXC update applied to that card for use in another Switch that is on lower firmware? Or is the SDXC update applied to the actual console and not the SD card itself?

The thing is that you don't update the sd card, the SDXC update, is a update for the switch, that is because, the licence to use exFAT format that uses SDXC cards, is a propietary format of microsoft, and nintendo needs to pay microsoft money for each switch that has it, making the update happen when you put the SDXC card makes that nintendo only has to pay for the switchs that actually use a SDXC card.
Basically nintendo is stingy, the SDXC update is more like a driver you install in the switch, but nintendo make you connect to their servers to verify, because if you install it, nintendo has to pay Microsoft the money of your licence, and as nintendo wants you to stay in the lastest firmware, nintendo force you to update your switch to get the SDXC update
Whit the tutorial i linked, you basically extract the driver from a game that contain a update, and inject the driver on the switch yourself, this way, as nintendo is not contacted to do it, you get the SDXC driver whitout updating your firmware.

If nintendo give the update to every switch, nintendo has to pay for every switch, if nintendo only gives the update to the ones that insert an actual SDXC card, nintendo only has to pay for those Switches
