Hi I am unable to install a XCI and NSP onto a modded Switch (atmosphere, hetake)

I have two Nintendo Switches. I modded them both using exactly the same guide so they both now have Hekate and Atmosphere on.

Switch 1 has a 256gb SD card. This console has never had any issues transferring files of any size.
system version 17.0.0 AMS 1.6.2 E

Switch 2 has a 500gb SD card. This console is the one I'm having difficulties installing the game
system version 17.0.1 AMS 1.6.2

I transfer games to the Switch via USB cable. I don't take the SD card out, I connect the Switch consoles to PC via USB C.

I have a NSP file (and also the XCI version of the same game). I have dragged this game to Switch 1 and it dragged and dropped without any issues and has installed using DBIInstaller. Both the NSP and XCI versions of this game run fine. I can therefore rule out that there's any issue with the NSP and XCI file.

I cannot get the same NSP and XCI to work on Switch 2. On Switch 2, when I try to install either of the NSP or XCI files using DBI installer I get the message “invalid NCAMagic”. Tinfoil also fails to install it - error message "failed to read NSP metadata" and then another pops up "unknown NCA magic (decryption failed?)"

I've also tried dragging the NSP from PC to Switch 2 using “Hekate's USB tools” but this tells me that file is over 4gb so it can't be transferred. I'm completely confused here. I have Switch 1 that transfers files way over the size of 4gb so I don't understand why Switch 2 has this limitation with file sizes!!!!

I've subsequently completely deleted everything off Switch 2, formatted the SD card and started the entire modding process again and I still get exactly the same error!

I then bought another 500gb and get the same error again.

Before I modded either switch, I verified the SD cards using that HTest program that tests if SD cards are real are fake and all 3 SD cards I have are legit.

One difference I've noticed between Switch 1 and 2 is that on Switch 2, when I connect it to PC and go to the SD card via My Computer, there's six options (see attached image);
1) Firmware
2) Install
3) Installed
4) MicroSD card
5) System
6) User

Contrasted with Switch 1, when I connect it to the PC I only have the 'MicroSD Card' folder and none of the other 5 folders. Does anybody else have these 5 folders and could that in any way be an indicator as to why Switch 2 is not accepting larger files to be transferred to it?

Lastly, I'm relatively new to this, so please, no shorthand/ abbreviations - as much explanation as possible would be appreciated in replies. Thanks

Check your SD card format, you should learn to do usb install also.

FAT32 limit is 4GB.
How is it possible that my Switch 1 has games far larger than 4gb on it? It's fat32 and has some big games like FC24, AEW etc running on it. No issues with it at all.

If 4gb is the limit, how would anybody play most switch games? How do you get larger files onto your switch?

Learn to install game over usb cable from a computer or use a tinfoil shop, when you install over usb there is no size limit.

No idea how to do any of that and googling it pretty much only shows people transferring a game file from PC to Switch console and then they use something like Awoo or Tinfoil to install it.

Switch 2 has a 500gb SD card. This console is the one I'm having difficulties transferring files over 4gb to.

system version 17.0.1 AMS 1.6.2 E on both consoles.

I transfer games to the Switch via USB cable. I don't take the SD card out, I connect the Switch consoles to PC via USB C.

I have a 5GB NSP file (and also the XCI version of the same game).

I have some smaller game files installed on Switch 2, so I therefore can only guess that for some reason the Switch 2 console is rejecting files over 4gb. I suspect the entire NSP/XCI file isn't dragging across from PC to the Switch 2 during the drag and drop process, which would therefore mean only a portion of the NSP actually ends up on the switch (hence why it then fails to install)

I've also tried dragging the NSP from PC to Switch 2 using “Hekate's USB tools” but this tells me that file is over 4gb so it can't be transferred. I'm completely confused here. I have Switch 1 that transfers files way over thesize of 4gb so I don't understand why Switch 2 has this limitation with file sizes!!!!

From reading old posts in some other forums, some people seem to suggest that files over 4gb cannot be transferred to SD cards(formatted to Fat32). This doesn't make any sense to me as I can transfer files of any size to my Fat 32 Switch 1. Why would Switch 1 allow large files but the Switch 2 wouldn't? There's no consistency! Please can people confirm in the replies if they can drag and drop files over 4gb to their switch? I'm massively confused as I don't know which of my Switch consoles is operating correctly here. Should switch 1 not be able to transfer big files? Or is that normal? If so, why the f*** is switch 2 rejecting exactly the same size file?

I've subsequently completely deleted everything off Switch 2, formatted the SD card and started the entire modding process again and I still get exactly the same error!

I then bought another 500gb and get the same error again.

Installing by dragging games over to SD Install/NAND Install should always work. If you are seeing "Install" instead of separate "SD Install" and "NAND Install" it may be that you need to update your DBI.
Some titles (specifically XCI converts and DLC unlockers) will require Check hash during install to be turned off in the settings.
MTP Storages in the settings is where you can change which "drives" show up on the PC.
Also double check that your sigpatches are installed and up to date.

The 4GB limit is per file, not per game. On FAT32 the file system itself (as in the way the data is organized on the storage device) has a hard limit of 4GB because it uses a 32bit number to store how large any file is. And 32 bit can, at most, represent a number of up to 4,294,967,295 individual bytes, which is precisely 4GB.
And the way around that is to simply have larger games split up into multiple files so no single file hits that 4GB limit. BigOnYa already linked the tools that will do that for you automatically.

Hi thanks for the replies.

So it turns out my 2nd Switch console CAN accept large file transfers. I've dragged and dropped some 6GB and 8GB games onto it and they work fine.

The problem appears to simply be with this one particular game, both the NSP and XCI versions give me the same error "invalid NCA magic". Does anybody know what this error code means?

Could it be related to my firmware not being the latest so it wont install the game file (the game is a recent-ish paper themed release)

The firmware on my Switch 1 is older, it's 17.0.0 AMS 1.6.2 E - the game installed on this console
The firmware on my Switch 2 is newer 17.0.1 AMS 1.6.2 E - the game wont install on this console and gives me "invalid NCA magic" error

I just can't find any info on what "invalid NCA magic" means and how to resolve it.

Try updating your FW to 18.1.0 and use sys-patch instead of sigpatches. Most newer games (and many older ones with new updates) require a higher FW than you're on. And the reason I say use sys-patch instead, is I seem to see a lot of people having problems with the latest sigpataches.

OK thanks, I've never installed sys patches before. Do I download them from the Sigmapatches,su website?

Also is there a guide on how to update FW to 18.1.0? I've never done that before.

What I don't get is why the Paper game works on my Switch 1 console that has lower firmware than my Switch 2 console. THis is why I suspect this issue has nothing to do with FW otherwise surely the game wouldnt work on Switch 1?

The Switch officially supports SDXC cards, whose default format is exFAT according to the SD Association.

However I don't know about modded or hacked systems.
