The only two emulators I'm aware of that make use of the extra memory on a slim are the N64 and MAME ones.

No, the N64 one does not run most games, and yes it's laggy.

Yes, it needs to be hacked to run emulators. Either custom firmware, or the Half-Byte Loader.

With the SNES emulator, you're much better off running it on an actual cfw if you have the option. I have only messed with HBL briefly as I have my PsP 2k hacked with 5.00 M33-6. As you're on a 1k, I would really look into going the full hacked route.
