Whatever happened to calling things like Zelda adventure/action-adventure. It really is like like calling GOW and other similar games an rpg when there is really very little about them that correspond with what most people think an rpg is. It annoys me for some reason and it's happening a lot more lately I've noticed.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but are there any games like Zelda TP? Skyward Sword sucked.

Preferably games that don't have that stupid hentai/manga/anime-whatever-you-call-it look, like Xenoblade, Pandora's Tower, or any other JRPG.
99.99% of anime just pisses me off.

How about "The best 10 shovel-ware games on the Wii" instead...cause thats all I see on the Weewee :P

Lol but there are some good ones like Xenoblade I guess ( I only played Arc Rise Fantasia to be honest and it was an OK game)

Except it has no RPG aspects. That's like saying God of War is an action RPG.

Actually God of War is more of an action RPG than Zelda because you can actually level up your weapons and powers and shit. But no one calls it that.

For some reason people make the distinction that Zelda is a "RPG" yet Zelda-like games (such as Darksiders) would never get that distinction despite being more RPG-like.
what are Role Playing Game aspects to you?
Zelda is an RPG just a different approach than one might expect; Zelda 2, TP, SS, WW, and all Zelda games have you name your character, you are "link" but its intended that you put your name there so you feel like your playing the role of link. Its an an adventure in which you have to use items, even better leveled up versions of items, to conquer dungeons, defeat monsters, solve puzzles, explore a world map, open chests, buy things from shops, get better swords and shields, defeat the evil dark lord and save the princess to obtain the ultimate light. Its totaly an RPG its the story of the heros journey in a beautiful, action based, RPG format. But, Fuck Genres. :grog:

Those are like basic aspects in every game. I do the same thing in a thousand games but they're not considered "RPGs".

Why is everyone so obsessed with labeling it as a RPG? It's not better or worse because it is or isn't a RPG.

I'm obsessed with the opposite, because once you start accepting things like Zelda as an rpg it's just a downhill slope where every game can be considered an rpg thus eliminating the point of having a genre in the first place.

An action-adventure game (also known as 'arcade adventure game') is a video game that combines elements of the adventure game genre with various action game elements. From wikipedia and I think they get it right by calling it a action-adventure game and not an rpg or arpg.

rune factory is an ARPG not zelda

still need proof?

System:Wii
Release Date: Nov 19, 2006
No. of Players: 1 player
Category: Action, Adventure
Publisher: Nintendo

there you go
It's still considered an ARPG by many (certainly not a traditional RPG though), but just to get things moving, let's say I'm wrong and you are right. What matters for this topic is what the OP thinks.

@Zelosboss Where you asking to help decide on games to buy? If so, do games like Zelda fall into the category you were looking for? That would give us advise.

If Zelda is a RPG then so is God of War and Darksiders.

Those games actually have an argument. Zelda, there's no leveling which is quite crucial. By your definition, Rayman Origins is a RPG. You gain different abilities as the game progresses so it must be a RPG!

Mass Effect is an ARPG. Zelda is not.

Pretty sure we've recommend all the good rpgs for the Wii already so now this topic is just a debate on whether or not Zelda is an rpg. Seeing as I've already said my point on the matter I think I will just go play my favorite rts of all time Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Well you just said "No it's a RPG" and now you're saying "Just let it go!" It's not a RPG. I'm sick of people arguing that it is for some unknown reason. It doesn't make the quality of the games any different.

It's still considered an shooter by many (certainly not a traditional shooter though) :creep:

Minus like... all the leveling, dialogue, and emphasis on story. It's an ARPG where the action is third person shooting.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
