Hello there, GBATemp. It's your buddy Vash, from over at Game-Hackers.com, just filling you in on our latest project! I apologize if this is in the wrong section, and definitely feel free to move it.

In honor of the US release of New! Super Mario Bros. Wii, we've decided to spill the details on our latest project (and one of our only full collaborations). Tanooki is the first fully-featured level editor for New! Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing the user to completely customize every aspect of every level.

Forgot to mention that this is just the first BETA release, so it can do a lot but not everything you'd hope for. With user feedback comes improvements. Let's have it!

Okay, the readme says that you can open stages directly from an ISO of the game. But when I navigate to the directory with the game in it nothing comes up and I can't go any farther.

The readme says it opens ARC files and tells you how to get to those ARC files. You'll need a program to extract the ISO contents (Trucha Signer!)

Ah, okay. It's just the way the readme was written seemed to suggest that it would be able to go into the ISO for you. But it's easy enough to do with WiiScrubber, so there ya go.

is there ever any chance of this coming with images rather than hex? that would really be awesome

Always a possibility. It will at least be color coded to some degree. This is only the first beta release

This is incredible. Combine this with a file replacement code like Brawl and BAM! Toggle between custom or normal levels by turning a gecko code on or off.

New Kaizo Mario can't be far off

Output to Gecko will be in the next beta (it's on the "coming soon" list right in the readme!)

Epic...

Seeing that the game is soooooo small, we can fill it up a bit more now

Caan't wait to see all the youtube vids appearing soon

I hope in the future there will be the ability to do more than just change the items/enemies.
Maybe add levels, change the maps or add characters rather than change current ones. (wishful thinking)

I think this is gonna be popular and with USB loading people don't need to keep reburning to see changes, like they did back in the early days of GH3 customs.

what will be even faster is when somebody cooks up a variation of the brawl+ code to just load files from sd instead of the game iso. then you just make a new level and slap it on your sd card and play the game however you feel like booting it.

if that happens, it will make this mario game what it should have been from the start.. if the brawl plus method can work here, it would be insane.. but wouldnt sd code be needed in the game itself for it to read SD.. brawl used sd cards in the game directly to copy level creator levels and such.. mario has no such setup..

how do you get the levels into the game though?
Use WiiScrubber to replace the ARC files in the game image. You might want to keep a backup of the unmodified game before you start messing around with things.

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah it's all choice and that's a good thing :)
