Hardware Sound card help

Ok so i have an external 5.1 sound card with a surround sound system hooked up to it and i also have a external hard drive which doubles up as a media player (i.e watch films listen to music as a standalone..... obviously attacthed to tv/stereo)

The question i have is that the sound card has a coaxial s/pdif slot also and so does my media player (external hard drive)
so if i connected my media player to my sound card with the coaxial cable will i be able to listen to my music from my media player through my surround sound system?

Sorry, hopefully i'v worded it enough to understand, i sure hope so anyway lol

Depends if the coax on your sound card is an input or output.
