"Sonic Origins Plus" officially announced, features playable Amy

UPDATE: Sega has just released a trailer for the game in its official "Sonic The Hedgehog" YouTube Channel. The trailer came just a couple hours after the ComicBook.com article that got posted and then deleted, leaking the information of the game beforehand.

The whoopsies keep on coming for Sonic Origins related news, since not only was a rating for the alleged "Sonic Origins Plus" expansion leaked on Korean boards some months ago, but now we get new information regarding the elusive expansion to Sonic Origins.

Website ComicBook.com posted an article by mistake on March 22nd about "Sonic Origins Plus" with brand new information regarding the title. Not only was the release date and full price tag revealed, but also the entirety of what the expansion will include, as well as other features and physical media that will go alongside it.

According to the leaked article, the game will release on June 23rd to celebrate Sonic's anniversary, and the price tag for it will be $39.99, in both physical and digital formats (unlike the original Sonic Origins which was only released in digital form). Gamers which already own Sonic Origins will be able to upgrade their base game for a mere $9.99 to add all of the features that the "Plus" expansion brings.

As for the actual features that the Plus expansion will bring, this is what the leaked article listed:
  • (Sonic Origins) Main Game
  • 12 Game Gear Games Emulated and Playable in the Museum. These include:
    • Sonic the Hedgehog
    • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
    • Sonic Chaos
    • Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
    • Sonic Drift
    • Sonic Drift 2
    • Sonic Spinball
    • Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble
    • Tails Adventure
    • Tails' Skypatrol
    • Sonic Labyrinth
    • Sonic Blast
  • Classic Amy as a Playable Character in Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3, and Sonic CD
  • Knuckles as a Playable Character in Sonic CD
  • All Previously Released Sonic Origins DLC
  • 20-Page Artbook (Physical exclusive)
  • Reversible Coversheet with New, Never-Before-Seen Art (Physical exclusive)
Sonic Origins Plus will be available in both physical and digital formats for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X and PC.

Unfortunately the game gear games will look awful. Wish they were remakes. Some of the fan made remake projects are really well done.

yet another Game Gear compilation package. Playable Knuckles in CD has potential (I was disappointed with playable Tails but that was because I had to learn how to route Quartz Quadrant legitimately due to the difference in movement rules). I'm not sure what "Classic Amy" actually means but if it means smashing things with a hammer I'm all for that as well.

I feel conflicted a/b this compilation since I'm capable of playing those same bundled games via emulation, but Sega also included quality of life improvements catering to the modern day gamer. I'll probably get this game once it eventually goes on sale at a major discount 😁.

This expansion/update only makes sense if they fixed all issues in the games included with the base game, because all of them lack polish to some extent, a few examples are:
  • The stiff drop dash in Sonic 1, 2 and CD
  • The muffled audio and weird physics in Sonic 3
  • The terrible audio mixing in Sonic CD
  • Not being able to select a zone after 100% a game (except for Sonic 3 and time trial mode)
Also, it would feel much more complete if they also included the emulated versions of other genesis sonic games as bonuses (3D Blast, Spinball and even Chaotix) and options to customize the experience in the remastered games.

Wait... game gear version?
Aren't the master system versions better?

I wouldn't mind a remaster of Sonic 1/2 and Chaos... specially if they remaster the music (Bridge Zone <3)

Playable Amy and Knuckles in CD is nice and some bonus ROMs will be fun but they need to give the rest of the package a ton of polish and refinement. It was seriously lacking in consistency and replayability.

Also please swap out the replacement prototype tracks with versions that don't sound like arse.

Yeah, I got more stuff on a single one of the old PS2/Gamecube compilation thihgs Sega used to make. Sure the emulation there is not perfect but is hard to notice fue yo how buggy Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knucklas can get even in real hardware.

Amy being added and Knucles getting some CD love is nice although the game needs polish and settings that hopefully just isn’t bullet point material.

It’s had to be excited at game gear games but if they did the work with M2 or Digital Eclipse to make that experience fleshed out then maybe it’d be neat. Although that’s likely hoping for to much.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
