GamePad turns on when you turn off Wii U in Wii mode. An update seems to have fixed this.
You can't hold the power button when the Wii U freezes; you have to yank the cord out.
Sometimes the Wii Remote doesn't connect when your far from the Wii U. I haven't tested it really near the GamePad and far away from the GamePad.
