Simple guide to install cIOS on vWii + backup NAND and keys

Simple guide to install d2x cIOS on vWii + backup NAND and keys
Last update: April 29th 2016
Still a valid hacking procedure as of September 2016.
(see Changelog at the bottom of the post)

What does it do?:
This guide shows you how to install cIOS into vWii (aka the Wii-mode of Wii U) and backup vWiis keys and NAND.
cIOS is needed to use backuplaunchers like Wiiflow and USB-Loader GX.
This does not enable any hacks in Wii U-mode!

Note: You already need to have Homebrew Channel installed on vWii to use this guide (use one of these exploits)!
Lets go:
Download the following package:
www.mediafire.com/?n2zl8v5kn288j9d
(Mirror at the bottom of the post)
All files are up-to-date (as of april 29th 2016)!
Note: To avoid errors, only use the files provided in this archive!
Don´t mix with other d2x-installer versions, meta.xml files etc.
Don´t worry, everything is up-to-date and the latest and greatest version.

It contains:
- Dump Mii NAND v1.2
- d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii
- d2x-v10-beta52-vWii
- FIX94s d2x cIOS Installer 2.2 mod

First we make a backup of your vWii NAND and keys:

1.) Extract the contents of vWii_cIOS_apps_20131218.zip to the root folder of your SD card.
Note: Make sure that you don´t have any original Wii system files (like wads) on your SD Card!
d2x installer could accidentally use them for installation and brick your vWii!

Also make sure that you have at least 528MB of free space on the SD Card for the NAND dump.

3.) Launch Dump Mii NAND from the Homebrew Channel.

4.) The NAND and keys dumping will start automatically (the NAND dump will be stored in sd:/nand.bin, the keys in sd:/keys.bin).
Note: DON´t use this dump on an original Wii!

5.) When finished (depends on the speed of your SD Card), the Wii U will reboot.

5a.) (Optional, but recommended step.)
Dump your IOS one-by-one to wad files for possible semi-brick fix (for more info read this thread):
I.) Download YetAnotherBlueDumpMod from here.
II.) Copy the files to your SD card sd:/apps/YetAnotherBlueDumpMod and launch the app from the Homebrew Channel.
II.) Go to System Titles and dump each IOS individually to a wad.
When prompted to fakesign the ticket or TMD, say No to both.

It's a tedious process, but it could save you a lot of trouble in the future.

If you don't have CLEAN (non fakesigned) IOS, you won't be able to fix semi-bricked vWii.
You can't create non fakesigned wads from a NAND dump or from using ShowMiiWads. You NEED to use YetAnotherBlueDumpMod.

Now we install d2x cIOS:

6.) Launch d2x cIOS installer from the Homebrew Channel.

7.) Choose which d2x cIOS version you want to install, beta52 or beta53-alt.
If you don´t plan to use EmuNAND, i recommend beta53-alt.
Note: For info about the differences between beta52 & beta53-alt click here.

8.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <56>
Select cIOS slot : <249>

9.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

10.) Press A to continue.

11.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <57>
Select cIOS slot : <250>

12.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

13.) Press A to continue.

14.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <58>
Select cIOS slot : <251>

15.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

16.) Press B to Exit.

17.) Launch newest Wiiflow or USB-Loader GX or CFG USB Loader MOD from the Homebrew Channel.
Note: To copy game images from PC to your external HDD with the correct folder structure, use Wii Backup Manager.
To fix the 4:3 aspect ratio bug of the Homebrew Channel, see FAQ & Troubleshooting section.

18.) Read the FAQ & Troubleshooting section carefully!

19.) Happy gaming! :D

FAQ & Troubleshooting:
- there is currently no Bootmii for vWii, so we use Dump Mii NAND.
- there is no Hermes cIOS 222/223 for vWii (don´t install the Wii version!).
- connect your HDD to the upper back USB-Port.
- you need a Y-USB-Cable for some 2.5" HDDs to properly work (even when they worked on the original Wii), because the Wii U USB-ports have a lower power supply.
- if HDD gets detected but no games load or HDD "clicks" you need a Y-USB-Cable
- to prevent the HDD format message on bootup, use U-Stealth.
- some HDDs don´t work with cIOS 249(base 56), so change the cIOS to 250(base 57) or 251(base 58) in your USB-Loader.
- to fix the 4:3 aspect ratio bug of the Homebrew Channel use JoostinOnlines HBC Forwarder or tueidjs aspect ratio fixer (tueidjs fixer doesn't require installing a wad to the console, it's a homebrew to launch from Homebrew Channel before launching other homebrew).
- to (un)install wads i recommend YAWMM_EN 0.5e (english Version) or YAWMM DE 0.5e (german version).
- if you want to start installed wads like VC/Wiiware from SD card, you need to patch IOS80 (system menu), use this thread for guidance.
Note: This is dangerous! If you f*** up IOS80, you will get a brick!
Only use the patch if you know what you are doing!

- don´t install Priiloader, it will brick your vWii!
- don´t install original Wii Channel Forwarder, they will freeze on startup! Use the ones from this thread. (For WiiFlow you can use the official Channel Installer)

Many tools/installers/wads etc. that worked on the original Wii will brick vWii!
So be very cautious on what you install!

Finally got it to go. I have wiiflow 4.2 on there now. I connect the hard drive but it isn't recognizing the games on my hdd. I do a hear an occasional click from the drive so I'm assuming I will need a Y usb cable? Do you guys who needed a y usb cable remember atleast seeing the games listed on the tv just not able to play them or will they not show up until the drive gets the proper power it needs.

Hi guys. Tried using the batman lego exploit. Got to the second character and it gave me that hanging error message. I had to unplug power to reboot wiiu. My card is an PNY optima SD card 2gb. Any ideas?
What kind of error? when I'm trying with a incompatible SD Card, in the screen put a error like "It isn't plugged a SD Card" so what I do is used a another SD (1GB My Flash) and it worked!, sorry for my bad english, I hope you can understand me

If an Y-cable works and a normal one don't, then the hdd needs more power than one port gives. Actually I would recommend to use a power adapter for powering the hdd. (You should calculate the power which is needed; a USB2.0 port gives afaik 5V and 500mA.)

Hello everyone ... just asking...
I have bought a WiiU one month ago ... I have an almost 7 years old Wii too, so I know the importance of having a NAND Backup...
My vWii NAND Backup took all night ... but I don´t know what I can do with it yet ...
... Is a solution for a possible future problem? There is a real backup restoring app at this moment?
I want to install cIOS ... At this point, I guess will be virgin again by deleting the HBC... so I prefer more information before installing them.
PD: I´m from Chile ...sorry if I wrote something wrong ... I have tried to read the forum as I can ... but I haven´t found a restore NAND app...

Thank you everyone and happy new year!!!

Hi all,

I was hoping some of you enlightened guys could help me out a bit :)

I've just gotten a Wii U (european region), and then I ordered SSX Flow for Wii from Amazon just to find out that it is for the US region :-(

Consequently, I've been trying to figure out how to patch my vWii so that I can play my SSX. There is a lot of information around, and so it is not always easy to get the complete view. From what I understand, I can install d2x cios on my vWii, which should allow me to play SSX of the purchased DVD without getting the region-block. If this is not correct, or if there is another way to get to play my game, please let me know :)

So far, I've been able to install HBC using Bathaxx. I've set up a SD card with the files referenced here: http://gbatemp.net/threads/simple-guide-to-install-cios-on-vwii-backup-nand-and-keys.339890/. However, when I get to the the cios installer (v2.2), it does not respond to my remotes. I am wondering if this is because I have have brand new wii remote plus. And so here comes the real question:

Can I use the latest version of cios installer (3.1) on my vWii/WiiU? In all the guides, cios installer v2.2 is referenced, and I am concerned that other versions are for Wii only and will not work (or, worse: brick) the vWii mode of my WiiU. Or is there another way to get the installer to work? Do I have to go and get myself an old controller?

I appreciate all your help! I have honestly tried to find this information by reading guides all over the place without finding clear info.

Sorry... there aren't any method for restoring vWii NAND... for now, I think in the future would have a bootmii vWii edition, from there you can restore a NAND backup, this is used only for precaution, I recommend you not to do anything dangerous with vWii because currently it can not be repair, at least to my knowledge...

Hey guys Ive been having problems like others with games attempting to load but it always goes to a black screen then back to the main menu after like 20 seconds. This is with Wiiflow 4.2, so Ive tried using the other loaders and cant get Homebrew Channel to recognize the other loaders from my SD card. Can I get some help here? Ive been working on this for weeks now and about to just sell my Wiiu and say screw it. When I download USB-Loader GX I get 3 folders with boot files in them. Am I supposed to put them on the SD card in some special way? Ive also tried CSB USB Loader Mod and nothing with that one either. The only one that shows up in the Homebrew menu is Wiiflow....
I would really appreciate some quick help here. Thanks.

homebrew usually only need a folder in the /apps/ folder (for example /apps/usbloader_gx/ or /apps/wiiflow/ etc.)

inside this folder, there are 3 minimum files:

/apps/your application/boot.dol = the program
/apps/your application/meta.xml = a file used by homebrew channel to display Name/information/and settings.
/apps/your application/icon.png = picture used by homebrew channel to display an icon

If the homebrew you download have more folders, they are often extras (options you don't need to install, for example USBLoaderGX has extra, like forwarder channel) or a folder required to copy to the root of your SD card ( SD:/settings/ or SD:/control/ etc)

Yeah so this is how I have it on my sd card. apps/usbloadergx_v3.0_dols/222.dol, 249.dol, and 250.dol, but none of these show up in homebrew. Are these the correct files for usbloader gx?

dols only show up if they're named boot.dol

I don't know why you have that many dols, looks more like an archive of versions than something you're supposed to be actually running.

apps/usbloadergx_v3.0_dols/222.dol, 249.dol, and 250.dol
The dols (executable) for version 3.0 are old!

The correct method to install the loader is this :

1. Download the "all in one package" (the one for 249) : http://code.google.com/p/usbloader-...r_GX_V3_0_AllinOnePackage_IOS249.zip&can=2&q=
2. extract the /apps/usbloader_gx/ folder to your SD card.
You should have this:
sd:\apps\usbloader_gx\boot.dol
sd:\apps\usbloader_gx\meta.xml
sd:\apps\usbloader_gx\icon.png

(exact names! do not change the folder name, keep the underscore, etc.)

You now have the version 3.0 (revision 1180).
But there are newer revision of the loader that you can update manually.

3. download the latest revision from here : https://www.mediafire.com/folder/t2x95zd9rz3rc/USBLoaderGX
Go to 3.0+ folder, go to the bottom and find the higher revision (currently 1218)

4. in the package, you will find 3 folders (222, 249 and 250).
You remember, you downloaded the "all in one" for "249", so what you need is the content inside the "249" folder of that newly downloaded revision.

5. copy the boot.dol located in the /IOS249/ folder into your sd:\apps\usbloader_gx\ folder and overwrite the existing one.

You have succesfully updated the loader.
repeat step 3 to 5 for each new update.

Additional feature:
in the "all in one package", you will find a "forwarder UNEO" wad file.
You can install it using a wad manager, it will add a channel to your System menu. It tels you :
- launch the loader directly from System menu, without launching the homebrew channel
- Return to the loader when exiting a game (you need to define "return to" in the loader's settings)

So Ive installed the forwarder UNEO wad for the usb loader to appear on the main menu, which it does, but when i load the usb loader it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. I have to unplug the wiiu to restart it. Any ideas?? It still works fine from homebrew btw. However when setting the "return to" to UNEO it does that same thing after exiting a game. Was I supposed to do something with the Channel and Forwarder dol files?

[Truth] great guide, I used it to hack my Wii U when I first got it months ago and I like how your keeping it clean and updated. One of my favorite things included in your latest vWii cIOS apps pack is a merged d2x cIOS Installer with both d2x v10 for vWii. I've been trying to figure out how to do that for the Wii version for months now, I asked around but couldn't get it to work. Is there a chance you or Cyan can make one for the the Wii as well and share it with me?

I already made one at the same time I did the vWii version.

It's using the latest d2x installer version (not Fix94's mod).
http://www.mediafire.com/download/5ggh53tj9hhp1tr/d2x-cios-installer-3.1-v6-v7-v8-v10-wii.7z
ATTENTION: it's the WII version. DO NOT INSTALL ON WII-U ! (for users thinking this thread is WiiU only)

It's UNTESTED!
but I did it the same way (merging the maps together).
I didn't include v9 as there's no final v9.
v10 = v8 + fixes
v10-alt = v9 + fixes
but I think v8 is better choice, you don't need v10 if v8 is working fine.

v6 should be included in the installer, so I only added v7 v8 and v10 in external folders.

When trying to run CFG with my USB drive connected to the top USB port, it freezes at the cfg title screen. It shows v70r65 Auto on the bottom right, but I'm unable to do anything other than unplug my Wii U. Can't even seem to hard shutdown.

I have installed:
Code:
cIOS: <d2x-v10-beta52-vWii>
cIOS base: <56>
cIOS slot : <249>

cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta52-vWii>
cIOS base : <57>
cIOS slot : <250>

cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta52-vWii>
cIOS base : <58>
cIOS slot : <251>

Has anyone experienced the same issue or know how I might solve it?

I have the same problem, My solution is connectinc the drive before the loader starts or if it didn't work connect it when is searching the USB, if this neither work, try using a Y-Cable. For me I need a Y-Cable :(
