Valve celebrates 20th anniversary of 'Half-Life 2' with giveaway and new documentary

It's been 20 years since Valve released its iconic game Half-Life 2. To celebrate this anniversary, the company has aired a 2 hour-long documentary, featuring details about it's development and the future of the series.

"The ending of Half-Life: Alyx is somewhat a self-critical realization," said Gabe Newell. "I think that Half-Life represents a tool we have and promises made to customers to capitalize on innovation and opportunities to build game experiences that haven't been involved previously. And I think there are no shortage of those opportunities facing us as an industry right now."

There is also some interesting information about the never released Episode 3. “We could have shipped it. It wouldn’t have been that hard,” Gabe Newell said, regarding the cryptic episode. “My personal failure was being stumped. I couldn’t figure out why Episode 3 was pushing anything forward.”

Maybe the company is awaiting for some new technological leap to make a new Half-Life game or even ship the Episode 3. In the meantime, you can claim Half-Life 2 on Steam to keep as Valve is giving the game away for a limited time.

The documentary was very worthwhile. The 2 hours flew by as someone who wouldn't necessary class themselves as a HL megafan ( I enjoyed the games very much don't get me wrong ) but I don't know or care to know much about the lore outside of playing the games. But the development history was very insightful.

I think a HL3 is definitely on the table after all the recent success of the brand that Alyx brought as well as this 20th anniversary buzz. (nearly 2 million views on the video already).

There is definitely a half-life project in the works that is all but confirmed. Some VA listed working on "Project White Sands" from Valve on their website and the Source2 metadata lists someone wearing the HEV suit. Both of these were removed after being noticed.

I said this in the other topic, but I'm interested to know what the "restored content" was. Small details? New areas? Whatever it is, I'm intrigued.

I'd be very conflicted about a new Half-Life. I'd want a new entry to set the industry on fire and get people talking like the olden days(tm). I'd be worried about cheap tricks, like nostalgia baiting (Metal Gear Solid 4), killing/replacing Gordon Freeman (Terminator Dark Fate), or making Gordon Freeman the spontaneous bad guy.

I said this in another topic, but I hope the devs do more than hype the boat the whole time, since fans already know it's coming.

Having seen plans for Half-Life 3, especially the story, I think cancelling it was the right decision.
You mean that piece by Marc Laidlaw? HL:A kind of followed that storyline to a minor degree, even though taking place in the past.

Sad they stopped making these. If they couldn't do it, they could have used some of their hundreds of billions from Steam to pay someone else to keep working on them to Gabe's satisfaction. I guess that risks losing money, and Gabe is in the money making business.
