I have the DS original and im thinking whether i should get a DS lite. Im finding that i use my DS all the time now so im not sure. THe problem is of course that i wont be able to sell my original DS because no one will buy it!

I don't think you should get a DS Lite. If you already have a DS Phat and it works great, there is technically no need for a Lite. Besides, sooner or later Nintendo will release a newer handheld and you would have regretted buying the DS Lite.

Take my word for it and be content with what you have. Save the money for something better in the future

i suppose, i have a M3 CF which kinda sticks out a bit but i like the original because its quite bashed up so i dont feel i need to take much care of it (silly i know).

Am i right in thinking the DS lite just has a nicer screen as you can adjust the brightness?

I've broken 3 of my DS Lites...they're a bit fragile, but a lot of it's because of my clumsiness...
I say stay with the DS Phat, if it breaks - buy a DS Lite.
The DS Phat plays the same games as the DS Lite.

Save your money. Hell, what if Nintendo announces a new DS handheld soon?

There are things more important in life than having a brand new DS lite...

So unless you have plenty of money, I suggest you to stick with the phat one.

Personnaly I did buy a lite when I already own a phat but it was because I sold the phat one for 180€ with 4 crappy games

So yeah, the lite is sexier but it doesn't worth spending 130 bucks in it when you already have a device to play NDS games.

DS Phats are more resistant to damge, but the DS Lite is nicer, smaller and has 4 level backlight, whereas the DSPhat only has 2. Like I chose a DSL even though I already had a DS Phat, never regretted it, so sexy and feels better in my hands.

The display is a huge problem with the DSPhat for me, playing on the train when the sun's shining is almost impossible. I'm going to buy a DSLite in the summer becuase of that. If you have that money just lying around, do it!

there is no difference with the lite .. i have the same problem too
when the sun shines it's impossible to see with the lite or the phat

if you really want one , buy a lite
but i recommend saving your money if your phat works fine

What's wrong with you people? Of course there's a good reason to get a Lite; It has roughly double the battery power of the Phatt, in order to support the extra brightness levels. We're all flash cart users here. Any smart person with a Lite would set the brightness to minimum (same level as the Phatt) and reap the benefits of the extra battery life. Flash carts cause an extra drain in the DS' power, so the extra life really comes in handy.

I could care less about what the Lite looks like. If I could have bought a Phatt with just as good a battery, I wouldn't have my Lite today, although the extra brightness settings are very useful for outside use.

The point of this thread isn't which one to buy, it's whether someone who already has a Phat should bother to upgrade. You're right that is a benefit of the Lite which someone buying their first DS should consider, but it's not a good enough reason to pay out £100 to replace a piece of hardware you've already got.

somethings tells me they wont. Game Informer's loose talk section said nintendo has finish working on the newest version of the ds. Thinner, no gba slot for sleekness, and a memory slot(!?). Nintendo wont officially tip their hands sill the sales of the current ds versions show a significant slow down. i waited 3 weeks after christmas before any of the stores near me had even a used ds.

It's still not necessary to buy three iterations of the same product though.

I'd suggest saving your money as well, especially if your DS Phat still works fine. That way when they DO announce the new handheld, you'll have the money saved up to buy it and a few games right off the bat. The battery life of the Phat is disappointing, yes, but I agree with Psyfira in that it's not worth buying an entirely new system for.

Latest Switch 2 leak says it will have a LCD, not OLED, run most games 40fps max, and only be 1.5 tflops handheld, 3 tflops docked. That's less than the steamdeck at 1.71 handheld, 3.1 docked.

  • console @ console:
Switch 2 LCD is about like TN type compare to old Nintendo Switch LCD before. Also games running on 40 FPS look not good for us and people. 60 FPS are best for normal everyday gaming. That's weird. I think should not buy Switch 2 because it like Switch 1.5 something like that. Little improve but not major improve. I think going to skip it.

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea that's just rumored but not sounding that impressive for a next gen upgrade. Of course Nintendo is very good at optimization of their games to play well, but for a $400+ 2025 console I expected a little better. Even a $299 2020 Xbox Series S has 4 tflops.

I thought it was supposed to be on par with an xbox 1 in power, why is it running most things at 40fps lol
  • Anrei @ Anrei:
in terms of power I thought it was a 2.0 compared to the switch man 40fps sounds whack is there poor optimisation or something?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Just rumors/ leaks. We will find out in a few weeks. But yea prob way underpowered to save battery, for longer playtimes, like Switch 1 is.
