Hello,

I'd like to now how difficult it would be to port Pokemon Emerald into the Pokemon Platinum (or HG/SS) engine? I am not an experienced ROM hacker but since it would only require porting the maps, graphics, script, trainer data and events (no need to recode the actual engine) I assume it wouldn't be too difficult to do, at least compared with a port that would require recoding absolutely everything.

My logic is that since we'll have Kanto and Johto in HG/SS, Sinoh in DPPt, we're only lacking Hoenn which is stuck in GBA-only games. Since the game would be seen as "Platinum" by the other DS games, that would mean we would also have Pokemon trading from Hoenn Pokemon to others.

Thanks!

Well, not that I even know how to hack Pokémon games (or any games, for that matter), I may not know the most about this, but…

I haven't seen very many hacks of Diamond/Pearl/Platinum that are much more than sprites, some script, and changing Pokémon a little. This would be a lot more than those.

And can the maps, graphics, script, trainer data and events actually be directly ported? Or would they have to be redone?

Again, I don't know how to do any of this, so I don't know how hard or easy it would be to do, but from what I've seen, it'd probably be pretty hard.

It'd be quite hard; the reason they tend to take so long legitimately is it's more then just a pallet swap.
The new games now use a 3D world; while Emerald still used 2D.
Graphics are updated also. But yeah; not easy, I've pondered it myself to some extent.

If anything I'd rather make my own title from scratch; which of course is a hell of alot of effort anyhow.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten Emerald was still in 2d... >_< Still, remaking Emerald with the Platinum graphics should be feasible albeit difficult. Perhaps not even that difficult if Platinum gets documented and a group of people work on it, I've seen people overhaul other DS games like New Super Mario Bros (granted, it's a world of difference from platformer to RPG), so the DS hacking scene is not a distant future thing.

not impossible but will take a majority of a year...
you will need to modify:
Towns, buildings, tiles, sprites, tile types, random encounters, script, location names, events, music, sounds, and stuff like that...

its all possible with the current tools but like i said, it will take a majority of a year

Sadly, it cannot be done with our current tools and understanding of how the 4th gen versions work. All we can do is beg Nintendo and wait for them to notice your request. They may already be working on it.

I'd also love a remake of the first gen on the new 4th gen engine.

And on topic: it's pretty much already been said how difficult it would be and time-consuming as well.

think about it guys. Nintendo has been remaking all the old gba/gbc games and stuff.

[pokemon red and green = fire red/ leaf green]
[pokemon silver/gold = soul silver heart gold]

they would most likely make a remake of ruby/sapphire/emerald.

sooner or later..

It's impossible at the moment, because it'll involve map hacking, which is not yet possible for gen 4 games.
And even if it was possible, why would you wanna do it? First off the 3rd gen games suck, secondly it'll be remade in a couple of years.

If you were to do this a) it wouldn't be a port, because the very fundamentals of the game are different (2d vs 3D, etc.) and b) you'd have to write the majority of the tools to do so yourself.

And please, if you're doing a ROM edit, come up with an original idea. Everyone and their grandma has their own shitty GSC remake, we don't need the same thing with RSE. Solution to problem: Don't use your DSi, or wait for GBA emulation.

WTF are you reading? The only request was for information on if it was doable via hacking. Nintendo doesn't support or even remotely acknowledge hacking of their games.

How about you stfu and let the guy do what he wants. If he wants to remake RSE then let him, its none of your business.

"How hard is it?" Let's just say, 'very hard'.

Wait for a remake.

Gen I

- Red & Blue
- Yellow

Gen II

- Gold & Silver
- Crystal

Gen III
- Ruby & Sapphire
- Emerald

Remake - FireRed and LeafGreen

Gen IV

- Diamond & Pearl
- Platinum

Remake - HeartGold & Soul Silver

If the next gen follows the same pattern which it probably will, it should be a little something like this

QUOTEGen V

- Something & Something
- Something

Remake - Ruby and Sapphire

It's doable, but considering you have no experience, highly unlikely. I would bet an official remake will be released 2012, based on the 10-year remake pattern they seem to be following.

Chill. Not only did I say please, but I am in no way "not letting" him do anything. As a matter of fact I don't believe I could do that if I tried; this is the internet after all.

Furthermore, I could use your same freedom to act mentality in my favor. If I want to say how unoriginal and pointless an RSE remake is then let me preach, it's none of your business. The (perhaps sad) truth is that we're on a forum and everything is everyone else's business, within reason. I don't believe I've crossed the boundary into being overly critical/negative, and that seems to be backed up by the fact that no disciplinary action was taken.

I'm sorry if I dimmed your hopes for an RSE remake (or at least one before the official one).
