Your not using an clean rom. Download a new rom, and patch it

Are you sure you're using the correct patcher? There's one each for HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Exactly the same happens here, M3 DS Real running the Sakura firmware on an 8gb SDHC card.
It didn’t recognise my previous save and freezes when I try to save.

I am using the m3 real with the 4.4 x firmware and it is running fine. I haven't tried sakura so I can't comment on that particular firmware.

How did you get the 3.1 version? are you (beta) tester ?.
Or are you using some other translation
