@XFlak I've bricked my Wii so many times, although it was always because
1) I was bricking so I could test a brick recovery method
2) I was testing an app/theory for somebody that I knew was almost certainly going to brick my Wii.

The only exception is one time when I tried to install SM4.1 with Dop-Mii and it crashed during the install.
I wonder what mike333 would think of us when he sees we turned his post waaaaaaaaay off topic.
We answered his questions multiple times. Anything related to gamesaves is now offtopic. :P
Dop-Mii has never failed on me, how could it crash? (Except with HBC 1.0.8 Dop-Mii crashed on launch 4 Me all the time)

Wii system software is a set of updatable firmware versions,
From Nintendo's own page
Because unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.3 will check for and automatically remove such unauthorized files.
If Nintendo says it's firmware then thats what we go with since they made it.

It bricks because he used the word "firmware" instead of System Menu. :P
Ok, since this thread is already off topic and no one has complained yet, how can you say that it is not firmware?? Just because it changes often and easily? Same with the PS3, 360, modems, and routers. I think the meaning of 'Firmware' has changed a lot from its original meaning.
The System Menu is just like any software. It's not even like an OS since nothing runs under it. It runs like a channel or game would. An IOS is much closer to firmware because it offers low-level hardware access and such. I started a thread trying to find the origin of this "System Menu is firmware" nonsense, but from the answers I got it seems like there was no real origin (such as a project or post) to it.
On Wiihacks the "cIOS explained"thread clearly states that IOS is not the firmware.

P.S. More than 1.5 thousand people said thanks to the author

1) That's wikipedia, lol
2) That doesnt' say the SYSTEM MENU is firmware. In fact, it suggests that the IOS's are firmware.

It's not really firmware, but it's the closest thing to firmware that the Wii has.

@DeadlyFoez They talk about updating your router's firmware, lol. There is no mention of the System Menu itself being firmware.

wow, there were like 5 posts all answering the same question within a minute of each other.

@[member='JoostinOnline'], careful otherwise I might write a batch file to install bootmii @ Joostin... overwriting the original, lol. I think the ultimate goal of the Wii Scene should be to reprogram Joostin (I almost said "flash" instead of "reprogram" but decided not to go there, lol!)

but (not so) seriously, I've been on the 'temp a lot longer then you... so in that sense I am old and set in my ways. Bad habits like using the terms bootmii @ boot2 and firmware instead of system menu are hard to break... keep it up and I'll start yelling at you to keep off my virtual lawn ;)
Wait, did you say batch file there? Remeber AdballahTerro's post asking if you can run .bat files on the Wii? Don't turn into him.
What I wanted was a bat to dol converter. please don't misquote me B-)

It's a long story, but basically before 4.2 was released and IOS60 was stubbed, WiiSCU was safe (albeit a ticking time bomb). Before IOS60 got stubbed WiiSCU installed the most recent version of IOS60, at the time v6174. Once it got stubbed it started installing the newer stubbed v6400 of IOS60. Back then I was still a noob just following guides and not really understanding what I was doing, and I happened to be softmodding a Wii THE DAY OF the 4.2 update, using the same process I'd used on a couple other Wii's (so I thought it was safe since I had successfully done the exact same steps many times before). I was basically one of the first ppl to experience a stubbed IOS60 brick. I tried all sorts of things to fix it (like autoboot discs) that I know now were a stupid waste of time\discs, and I basically gave up entirely on repairing it before even talking to DeadlyFoez about it... and my big mistake was deleting the nand backup I had made because at the time I thought all hope was lost. Anyways, it's a very funny story with so many different sides to it... from my aunt's perspective (the owner of the Wii) she literally put the Wii back in it's box and ran it over with her truck, yes, her truck. And would you believe that other than a slightly warped frame, the Wii was undamaged (at least in terms of hardware). Anyways, nintendo's warranty covered the damage because of the truck "accident" and never bothered to check if it was soft-bricked. In the end it all worked out for everyone (except nintendo), I got a spare set of wii cables, my aunt got the wii replaced and a free extra wiimote (only slightly damaged from being run over by her truck) and DeadlyFoez & Bushing got some spare Wii parts to play with. Not to mention that it was this incident that helped make Foez and I good friends and it also got me active in the wii scene... so in a way, u could say that WiiSCU v0.21 bricking my Wii is somewhat responsible for all I've done for the scene since then (so basically everything except my crazy intro videos) :P

The important thing is I won the argument. :P
We gotta let you win every once in awhile otherwise you start to PMS :P

Honestly, if I were a mod I'd be putting an end to this off-topic convo instead of contributing to it... so making me a mod would benefit gbatemp in 2 ways! hint hint :P

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
