Give me an instance where you can't recover from a full brick (I'm sure there is one but have never seen it) from Priiloader.
If you can still access priiloader then you don't have a full brick. A full brick means that the wii will not run any software, ie. priiloader, SM, bootmii.... nothing. Black screen and thats it.

why are you so concerned with backing up your saves anyways? Unless you're messing around with softmods frequently on a wii without bootmii@[member='boot2490'], the risk of actually losing any of your saves is next to nothing (only risk is hardware failure really). I think most people backup their saves not to save them for a rainy day like you're intending, but to install them on a friends' Wii or an emulated nand.
Just a question dude, why do you always mention bootmii as boot2 but not pre/priiloader?
Because
1) Priiloader is useless if you have a full brick
2) You can't make a nand backup with Priiloader, so it has nothing to do with saves
You can theoretically do a backup from Priiloader if you use it to boot Bootmii IOS, but you can only restore it if you have a GC controller (I don't have one)

priiloader can't recover from problems relating to the system menu or system menu IOS. BootMii @ boot2 can recover from anything (except losing power at the exact wrong moment during a boot2 update\install).

priiloader is great because it allows wii's without vulnerable boot1's to have some sort of protection (ie. can recover from banner bricks and theme bricks) but it will never be as much protection as bootmii @ boot2
Stop saying @boot2 and @IOS or I'll fly up to Canada just to slap you. :P

Edit: Anon, you can load Bootmii as IOS, but you aren't making a Nand backup with Priiloader.

bootmii@boot2 is best if something goes wrong with system menu or its ios then no priiloader!!

bootmii@boot2 will always be there(unless a boot2 update happens)
I can install it but I don't have a compatible SD card (it used to be compatible, then it stopped working (?))

wow, there were like 5 posts all answering the same question within a minute of each other.

@[member='JoostinOnline'], careful otherwise I might write a batch file to install bootmii @ Joostin... overwriting the original, lol. I think the ultimate goal of the Wii Scene should be to reprogram Joostin (I almost said "flash" instead of "reprogram" but decided not to go there, lol!)

but (not so) seriously, I've been on the 'temp a lot longer then you... so in that sense I am old and set in my ways. Bad habits like using the terms bootmii @ boot2 and firmware instead of system menu are hard to break... keep it up and I'll start yelling at you to keep off my virtual lawn ;)

Oh and @DeadlyFoez if you say a full brick means you can't run any software then how can you run BootMii?
Bootmii @ boot2 (fuck you joostin) is not part of the file system, so it is not really included in the description of a full brick.

Technically, even if your wii does not have a vulnerable boot1 and your wii is fully bricked, boot0, boot1, and boot2 still get executed. So I, and pretty much everyone else, doesn't consider bootmii @ boot2 to exclude a wii from the description of a full brick.

I guess that depends on who you ask, but as you have seen everyone in here is saying the only way to recover from a full brick is to have bootmii @ boot2.

or if you don't have bootmii @ boot2 you need the Wii's keys and DeadlyFoez for a friend (or $40+S&H if DeadlyFoez isn't one of your close personal friends... it's awesome being me, lol)

Bootmii @ boot2 (fuck you joostin)
LOL

Yeah only you and pune are worthy of that, but neither of you would ever brick a wii...... except for that one time when you bricked your wii with Wanky's Safe Firmware Upgrader (oh the irony).

Yeah, I'd like to overwrite the original also, or maybe just brick him. :D

Wait, did you say batch file there? Remeber AdballahTerro's post asking if you can run .bat files on the Wii? Don't turn into him.

It bricks because he used the word "firmware" instead of System Menu. :P

It was actually WiiSCU v0.21, but the end result was the same as wanin's not-so-safe-updater (stubbed IOS60). I'm telling you, that Wii I bricked should be in a Wii museum or something. It's the only Wii to ever be bricked by XFlak (sad that my program has a better\perfect track record but I don't, lol), that Wii single-handedly got me deep into the scene which led to the creation of Team Your Mom and ModMii. Not to mention that the Wii made it's way from me, to DeadlyFoez, to Bushing, each one of us keeping different parts of the Wii, lol. But the icing on the cake is that nintendo replaced the Wii free of charge (cuz it was run over by a truck "by accident"). lol, good times.

now we're really off topic, but I'm enjoying myself too much so w/e

lol, I couldn't do that even if I tried!

Besides, I'm sure it's got to be easier to write a batch file to reprogram Joostin than it is to write a batch file that can run on the Wii :P

@XFlak I've bricked my Wii so many times, although it was always because
1) I was bricking so I could test a brick recovery method
2) I was testing an app/theory for somebody that I knew was almost certainly going to brick my Wii.

The only exception is one time when I tried to install SM4.1 with Dop-Mii and it crashed during the install.
I wonder what mike333 would think of us when he sees we turned his post waaaaaaaaay off topic.
We answered his questions multiple times. Anything related to gamesaves is now offtopic. :P

Ok, since this thread is already off topic and no one has complained yet, how can you say that it is not firmware?? Just because it changes often and easily? Same with the PS3, 360, modems, and routers. I think the meaning of 'Firmware' has changed a lot from its original meaning.

I've only bricked my wii once, using the stupid preloader 0.29. Couldn't use IOS60, and I had to use IOS202 for System Menu. I replaced it with Priiloader, and am happy because of the fixed drive sleep issue. GO PRIILOADER!

The System Menu is just like any software. It's not even like an OS since nothing runs under it. It runs like a channel or game would. An IOS is much closer to firmware because it offers low-level hardware access and such. I started a thread trying to find the origin of this "System Menu is firmware" nonsense, but from the answers I got it seems like there was no real origin (such as a project or post) to it.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60
