Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

Oh yeah, I wonder what will happen to their handheld lineup. I guess it's over then since it's both console and handheld device. This will probably be the successor for both consoles Wii U and New 3DS? Damn! I'm so hyped. hahaha.

Those are not Tegra chips with high bandwidth ram though. Where is the ram kid? You see, it is worse to have half-knowledge than being a total amateur, because in your case, having half-knowledge means you are embarrasing yourself.

Show me something with Tegra power level AND RAM next time, kid. High bandiwdth ram. Which means more pins than DD3L. I am waiting. Oh, GDDR5 uses a ton of pins, btw. That is how they achieve their bandwidth... HBM the same, though i doubt they are using HBM.

The truth is, this is NOT feasible, at least not at this cost level. You are day dreaming, and wasting my time.
Wat? The RAM is a standard DDR3 SODIMM, you're completely out of your element. I didn't want to embarrass you any further by showing a tablet, but if you want me to, the Acer W700 features a Thunderbolt port and thus X4 PCIe, and it's ancient. In fact, *any* tablet with a Thunderbolt port does because it's part of the spec. It actually takes *more* space to use Thunderbolt over external PCIe because you're also packing eDP signal, HDMI signal, USB, and power, all on one connector. It'd take *less* space to just bother with PCIe lanes and the clock, but you live in your fantasy world if you want. Meanwhile, here's the Acer Switch which supports Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, and thus also X4 PCIe 3.0 *over a cable connector*.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3018...s-4k-screen-3d-camera-thunderbolt-3-port.html

You're assuming that they're using GDDR5 for *some reason* even though they might not - the XBO certainly doesn't, so your RAM point is moot. RAM and PCIe are separate issues, they're controlled by separate controllers. Even if we do add RAM to the equation, there is no reason why the external GPU would have to use internal RAM beyond physics. At all. The eGPU can have its own VRAM, at which point the bandwidth between the system and the GPU is irrelevant as far as VRAM is concerned because traffic goes only in one direction - towards the dock, and once processed, from the dock to the screen. This is why eGPU setups work better on external screens rather than internal ones - in that kind of an implementation you're working with almost exclusively one-directional traffic. Not having to route the data back to the main board and displaying it directly from the eGPU frees up tons of bandwidth. This would be the case here because *you can't use the screen when docked*, so you're not routing frames back to the device.

I'm not saying that Nintendo is using an external GPU, but to say that they can't is false and to support that claim by saying "I'm a software engineer" is agregious appeal to authority fallacy. It's *perfectly feasible*, especially on a *custom chip*, it's merely cost prohibitive, which is not the same thing at all.

I don't even know why I'm arguing this with you when what I'm saying is verifiable fact - we already know that Tegra chips support external GPU's in MXM packages, which is an implementation of PCIe, and we know that because boards like that exist - the interface is *not* the issue here.
Anything that this can plug into

What, you think that's too thick for a gaming oriented tablet?
You should be arrested, murder is a crime, and that post's a killer.

maybe the LEDs double as battery indicators for the joy cons?
the square could be a detachment latch/button?
Say you're playing a game where each half of the controller is a separate player. Maybe the two indicators are there so you know when one gets assigned to another player. I'm thinking the Grip itself doesn't actually talk to the console. Rather, the controller pieces do. Maybe it's there to prevent you attaching another player's controller piece by accident?

I bet the Switch will have battery problems. Watch there be Nintendo-branded battery expansion kits and portable battery chargers.

Also I see how Bethesda is on the list but i'm willing to bet the next Elder Scrolls won't be on the Switch.

Don't mind me, though. I'm getting myself ready for disappointment. I'm hyped as fuck.

Nintnedo, give me a sparkly gold and white console with it's own little carrying bag, bundled with a new Final Fantasy Tactics game. I'll be yours.

I can't see them marketing a standalone handheld after the Switch. I mean you could have revisions, but having Switch and than "4DS" afterwards would defeat the purpose and be redundant. This is definitely replacing the Wii U and 3DS, rather you dislike the size or not.

I doubt it. The portability isn't as convenient as say a 3ds. I doubt Nintendo wouldn't give us a pure a handheld gaming experience just because of the Switch.

My guess is that they'll see how well this sells...

The 3DS XL isn't horribly portable but it isn't too bad...

Unfortunately stuffing a Switch into your pocket is going to be impossible...

But if they let you use it on the go like a regular android tablet people might carry this instead...
