Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

I am not 100% sure but isn't the Zelda scene where people say its frame lagging is happening because that is a slowdown time mechanic?
Meh. It's a fixed commercial, so to speak. One should always take these announcements with a grain of salt. There's A LOT we don't know.

My guess is that they'll see how well this sells...

The 3DS XL isn't horribly portable but it isn't too bad...

Unfortunately stuffing a Switch into your pocket is going to be impossible...

But if they let you use it on the go like a regular android tablet people might carry this instead...
I'm worried about the "regular tablet" part. I would LOVE it if they pulled that off, complete with YouTube, Netflix, and other tablet apps. BUT:

Look at the side of that thing. The tablet. There's a connector strip running down the entire side o' that baby. How terrible would it be to hold that thing Landscape in your hand? Or rest it on your lap/desk in portrait? I don't think it'll be used for anything much other than gaming. Those strips don't seem detachable.

looks pretty interesting, a decent third party lineup and who knows how long that will last
I am concerned about battery life and also device build quality

I'm probably in the minority here, but I was hoping for a regular console with a regular controller that had specs comparable to xbone and ps4.

I knew it wouldn't happen, but hopefully they'll at least have a party chat this time.
Ah, so grossaffe was right.

What would make this even better is if you could buy the base at an affordable price and be able to just dock the console/tablet in any room of the house.
This!

This x 1,000!
What did you have in mind?
Probably something like this...

That isn't what Nintendo is about though...

That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, to be fair. This will do though, I always proclaimed that I'd be first in line for a Nintendo phone, a tablet is the next best thing.
We used to argue a lot on here. Then we discovered we agreed on most non-video-game related stuff. And now you are approving of Nintendo. And we put a joint smack-down on an "expert".

Logical assumption. Many people wanted a regular console. Then again, if you wanted a regular console, why not go for Xbox One or PS4? Here I see a Nintendo console without too much goofy control gimmicks, just a rather useful portable mode with controllers to help make it happen. It's very much a regular console when docked. If you want a more "regular" feel, the Pro controller is there.

If you want a regular console, then get a regular console. Nintendo isn't, and that's kind of the point of Nintendo, to not be a regular console and try something new.

I always approved of Nintendo, they're my favourite company on the video game market. I was with Nintendo since the GBC and my love for them never skipped a beat. I only shit on them when they fumble and drift into the realms of stupidity, but I'll still buy their stuff till the day I die. I'm like a stern parent - I'll scold my little baby N when they're not getting A's on the test, but I'll still hug them and tell them a bedtime story in the evening. :P

Meant to ≠ Will
Never said it was?

I doubt it. The portability isn't as convenient as say a 3ds. I doubt Nintendo wouldn't give us a pure a handheld gaming experience just because of the Switch.
We'll see. They could also just do a smaller revision, while the controllers stay the same size.
