Weird... For some reason, a fan-translation of the book that comes with the game, which I see as no more copyrighted material than this translation project, was deleted.
please link these fan translations of the book here
i've got a full translation of the book, but it's in spanish, if anyone wants it just pm
thanx, will
I just want to remind everyone that the PDF containing actual scans from the book CANNOT be linked here, nor can they be PMed to other members.

You can post translations from the book on this thread if (and ONLY IF) it contains just the translated text (see AihanKaidan's post, for example).

Posting actual scans from the book is akin to providing a link to the ROM. The book and the game are copyrighted; your translations and patches are not. That is the difference. And even so, Level-5 and Studio Ghibli could still technically crack down on this project just because the translations are posted, but that's a risk we're willing to take.

And just a heads-up: if someone asks for the PDF scans by PM, you send it, and the person who asked for the PDF reports you, the staff will be able to see the reported PM and we'll know that you broke the rules.

I'm not trying to be a douchebag about it--I strongly support a (high quality) translation of the game and the book. But we have to cover our asses. We can't allow copyrighted material in any form to be posted freely on these forums.

I'm sorry, i didn't know.

i've got a full translation of the book, but it's in spanish, if anyone wants it just pm, and here's another thing:

you can use that to translate spells..

thanx, will
ok, i must admit, i did not search youtube

but i have to say i laughed
when i saw "terepootoo"(spell number 9) mentioned as "remote boat" instead of "teleport"
number 18 labeled feast should be more like voice imitation :) but it's not always that bad
some translation really help

Haha, sorry if it's wrong, but it's what i found. I have spells translations in spanish, if u want them just pm

No offense taken

but sure, no prob with that
i must admit, my call to make nice pics of the book was a bit too enthuseastic

but i repeat to my previous question:
if anyone knows of further resources of translations, which does not contain pictures or any other copyrighted material
and i assume this includes crude redrawn pics from the spells.

also regarding this "spanish translation"
is this a text file?
how complete is it?
or is this that already mentioned pdf?
pdf strongly suggests it contains pictures, so it is forbidden
also, i cannot speak spanish :) and my latin does not help enough

also personal progress:
i have translated most of the spell titles (not literal, sometime you have to guess what the japanese really meant, and the translations from the posted youtube video above is hilarious at some places) and written down for most of the pages a title/content description. which monsters, or items types and so on
i have not translated any free text like AihanKaidan does.

This is a gray area, but I'm going to say that redrawn pics of the runes should be ok. I would still be cautious about it, just in case.

But I think the safest thing to do would be to just tell people to use Google. It's really not that hard to find the runes.

Good suggestion. It's how I found the translation of the book I linked in the first place.

@cosmicow: aber es kann doch nicht sein, das yesasia sich dazu gar nicht äußert.

Nothing... BUT: They gave me a refund today. So it's all good now.

Cool beans. This is basically pages 6-10 of the book that I don't have to do. Haha. Thus far I've mostly been concentrating on the magic spells in the book. I figure I'll cover them in the order they are used in the game mostly, just for convenience sake. I am a bit tempted to skip over and do some of those Legendary Stories in chapter 6, though. They look fun.

About that youtube spell list...it's helpful for those that don't have the book or no Japanese knowledge, but you can tell it's all google generated translation. Sometimes mistyped, as in the case of that "Remote Boat," spell. It's actually Teleport, and I'm thinking the person wasn't very familiar with katakana, which is where most of the more egregious mistakes stem from. I know nothing of the Spanish language, or any translations Spanish speakers have done, so I'll just continue with my project in English and all that.

I've got a few pages to post as soon as I can type them up tonight, so there's that, too.

Nothing... BUT: They gave me a refund today. So it's all good now.
I'm glad you at least have some conclusion. That's sad that you didn't get it. Are you going to try again? I've never had such issues with yesasia, though they're not my favorite to buy from (even if they are generally cheaper for videogames). I hope you find a way to get it.

Yeah, that should be alright :)

That's rather unfortunate =/

Do they not have the game in stock anymore? Is there any other website that sells it? I tried to import it from Amazon Japan but they don't ship games overseas

So I emailed a friend in Japan and she gave me 3 copies last December that I haven't opened yet. When I finish editing translations for Blood of Bahamut, I'll open one of mine and take a better look at the book.

if anyhow possible, europe MUST always get crappy boxes:
we had crappy psx boxes and we had crappy dreamcast boxes.

better than nothing :/

i think i'm gonna concenrate on stuff with no or less flow text, which means i'll do the monster stats without their description and maybe then the items.

I plan to buy my own copy of the Japanese DS version of Ni No Kuni (including the book naturally) in a couple weeks while I'm going on my first ever trip to Japan, in addition to other Japan exclusive games like Ace Attorney Investigations 2 and some Studio Ghibli movies and shorts among other things. I'm considering getting the PS3 physical version of the Magic Master that's available in Japan too since NamcoBandai might not localise the book and even if they do it will be nice to be able to compare the 4 versions to each other. If they don't localise the ps3 physical version, I still plan compare the Japanese versions to the version on the English (North American) ps3 version and see if there's any differences art wise. Naturally I don't know Japanese (yet), but I'll still be able to compare how they looks well enough. Does anyone here know if the Japanese PS3 physical copy of the book is the same as the Japanese DS physical book? If so I'll stick to just getting the Japanese DS version and wait till the English localisation of the PS3 version of the game comes out in North America. If not, I'll get both and still get the localisation. Either way it should be useful for learning how NamcoBandai chose to localise the books so that we can emulate how their translation compares to the original for our translation of the book. In my opinion, until we know how NamcoBandai chooses to localise, we should try to keep our focus away from too much serious translation of the book. If we do translate the book now or any time before the official translation is released, we should be sure to later go back and compare the official to ours so we can incorporate NamcoBandai's syntax in order to make sure that those who have played the localised PS3 version of Ni no Kuni, probably the majority of people who will be playing the translation, will be used to the spell names and such. Of course, this is just my opinion. What does every one else think? Should we try to translate it directly and ignore the changes NamcoBandai makes, should we keep true to the official translation's syntax, or or should we simply choose on a case by case basis? Or is there an option I forgot?

I've seen posts in other places saying that the PS3 and DS magic masters are the same book. I wonder if it will be included at all in any English localized version, since there's going to be a different version of it included digitally in game. But when it comes to translating it...I'm going to keep at it. It's written for younger audiences making it very easy to translate, and frankly, I'm fed up with Nintendo's wishy washy localization strategy. They have so many games with huge fanbases dying for a localized version of games like Ni no Kuni, Fatal Frame, Last Story, Xenoblade...that they just aren't even bothering with. I wouldn't hold my breath for anything on their end. When it comes to the PS3 release...I'm not sure what to expect, but I don't see them releasing the book in a physical format if they've got one in game.
oh crap! i've never ordered from them before
i was actually going to but i prefer play-asia or CDJAPAN. their super quick ive gotten everything like 3-5 days after ive ordered
I've been ordering from yesasia sporadically since 2002. This is the first I've heard of them failing so hard. They were never my favorite place to shop, but it is quite a disappointment. Anyway, I like ordering from HMV.

Yes, the physical Magic Master hardcopy that's bundled with Shiroki Seihai no Joou is identical to the one that comes with Shikkoku no Madoushi. But you won't be able to get it with Shiroki anymore because it was only available if you preordered the PS3 game in Japan. Basically they printed a surplus of the book for Shikkoku, and in order to get rid of their stock they offered it as a preorder bonus for Shiroki. If anything, the only difference is that the Magic Master that comes bundled with Shiroki has a sticker label on the shrink-wrap, while the one bundled with Shikkoku has no sticker. See the image below:

Left: Shikkoku | Right: Shiroki

You might still be able to get a hardcopy if you buy Shiroki at a used game store. It would be nice for you to have two copies of the book. But even if you can't get a second copy, well you'll still have the one that comes with Shikkoku.

I'm almost positive that when Wrath of the White Witch is released, there will be a Prima Games strategy guide or some other official guide for it. It will likely contain most, if not all, of the information found in Magic Master (but not necessarily formatted/organized in the same way).

If you guys still want to translate the book before White Witch is released, my bigger concern would be the fact that the translation is a collaboration effort. Unless you have an editor who can read Japanese, it's going to be hard to keep things consistent. Not just with terminology, but writing styles will be different as well. My suggestion would be to have one person translate the book, maybe two translators at the most. Then they could collaborate with each other for consistency. If you want to have a third translator, he/she should just be an editor and check the work of the other two translators.
