Obviously to be taken with a grain of salt, gaming legend John Carmack (best known for Doom, Wolfenstein, Quake, Commander Keen, and the upcoming Rage) says that the new Xbox and Playstation consoles will be ten times more powerful than currently. Compared to current rumors about the Wii being 50% (or 1.5) times more powerful than the Playstation 3, this would be a major improvement.
This is all following rumors of a new Xbox being in development for next year's E3, after rumors have gone around that Crytek is developing the long-awaited Timesplitters 4 for the new Xbox and WiiU.
Carmack goes on to say that the next generation will be here in a couple of years, stating "It'll be another ten times as powerful as this [PS3, Xbox 360]. I'd be surprised if that doesn't last over a decade before people wind up saying, well, we've really tapped out everything you could possibly do on there."
He also goes on to say that the big issue next generation will be making graphics stand out. As some may notice this generation, there are plenty of games that look great, but few that have an edge over the others. According to Carmack, "The better games get the harder you have to go to give a delta people care about. That's going to be a challenge for the next-generation of consoles, to show what pack-in title is going to look so much more awesome than what you get on the current ones that people want to go spend $300 on a new console."
Still, take this with a grain of salt, as it seems to nothing but mere speculation, although from one of gaming's most famous developers.
Give us your thoughts though. Do you really think the next generation will be that powerful or do you think this is all nonsense?[/p]
