Obviously to be taken with a grain of salt, gaming legend John Carmack (best known for Doom, Wolfenstein, Quake, Commander Keen, and the upcoming Rage) says that the new Xbox and Playstation consoles will be ten times more powerful than currently. Compared to current rumors about the Wii being 50% (or 1.5) times more powerful than the Playstation 3, this would be a major improvement.

This is all following rumors of a new Xbox being in development for next year's E3, after rumors have gone around that Crytek is developing the long-awaited Timesplitters 4 for the new Xbox and WiiU.

Carmack goes on to say that the next generation will be here in a couple of years, stating "It'll be another ten times as powerful as this [PS3, Xbox 360]. I'd be surprised if that doesn't last over a decade before people wind up saying, well, we've really tapped out everything you could possibly do on there."

He also goes on to say that the big issue next generation will be making graphics stand out. As some may notice this generation, there are plenty of games that look great, but few that have an edge over the others. According to Carmack, "The better games get the harder you have to go to give a delta people care about. That's going to be a challenge for the next-generation of consoles, to show what pack-in title is going to look so much more awesome than what you get on the current ones that people want to go spend $300 on a new console."

Still, take this with a grain of salt, as it seems to nothing but mere speculation, although from one of gaming's most famous developers.

Give us your thoughts though. Do you really think the next generation will be that powerful or do you think this is all nonsense?[/p]

Pure stupidity, next-generation consoles will see improvemnts, true but they won't see an improvement like 10 times more, if the graphics were to improve they'll be x2.0 of current PS3/Xbox360, graphics have already gone to a high enough level, from there on if they were to proceed, we'll see real life instead of games and thus Virtual Reality.

Well this is a good and a bad thing, good because we'll finally have VR, bad because games will no longer look like games and instead look like actually controlling a real life person which is stupid (this point is towards consoles not VR, don't get confused)

They should actually try to offer us 10 time more reliable systems than 10 time more powerful one...

I don't really want to play with a very loud fan and a console that will die in a year or so...

We've seen improvements like this between generations before haven't we?
ex. PS3(3.2 Ghz) > 10 X PS2(297Mhz)
(and that was with only six years of seperation -- the next gen will have a 7-8 year gap)

Moore's Law should still be in effect unless I'm mistaken.

Not only was the PS2 10 times faster in terms of core speed, but also 6 cores in effect?

But 10 times the power of PS3 would mean 3.2x10 with 6 cores o.O?

If a PS4 is going to have a 30 GHz CPU, then where can I get one for my PC?

Maybe the PS3 will be able to play Crysis 4 when it comes out, whist is PC users will be laughed at for our pitiful Minecraft running 4 core CPUs.

There are already 6 Core Cpus with around 19Ghz, 30 Ghz will come soon dont worry.

This is just stupid. It's safe to assume sony won't be making the mistake of trying to be the most powerful console again. All that's happened so far is the weaker consoles outselling the more powerful ones i.e. wii and ps2. Price sells, and believe me sony are not going to make another $500 console, you can see their new strategy from the vita's specs being lowered to make it very affordable. As for microsoft, they've usually always matched speed of other consoles and not tried to do something risky so I don't see why that would change.

10x hard disk but not power... its just not useful bcz the dev time and costs would be huge. graphics maybe 2gb ati/nvidia infinity concepts with 3d images but not truly something like 4gb graphics cards etc or those that perform 10x better than a ps3/xbx
maybe it was an expression tht its 10 times and more like much more greater than the prev consoles
the tech is possible but not at low costs. when the ps3 came out, it was damn expensive so do u think tht will repeat again considering the tech is still developing and hence not reached tht stage?

rotflmao.

Running on LN2 might make the PS4 or the next Xbox a bit pricey.
