You're an idiot if you attempt to play by placing your finger like it is on your picture.
A friend of my always try to play that way. Everytime we play I say to him: "you're are an idiot"

b+a layout is for people like me who grow up with a NES controller
y+b layout is for little kids that grow up with the N64 controller
y and b on any controller is nothing like nintendo 64

I don't see why everyone is so hostile about this. All we want is customizable controls. And don't tell me that it isn't simply because Nintendo rushed it to the market, because the GB games that are in the eShop are the same way. It very well could happen in the future, but that also isn't the point. One can argue that if you have to think about the controls, then it isn't right.
One could then argue that if A = A, and B = B then no thinking needs to occur

The placement of the buttons Y and B on most controllers (snes, ds etc.) is the same ans A and B on the n64 controller, go have a look.

It isn't the button labels that are the issues, but the placement of course.

And to everyone who said it before, I did not grow up on N64, I grew up on NES and it is there that I started to learn the control scheme I am talking about. The tip of my thumb would be on B and I would rock the knuckle part of my thumb to press A. The SNES and N64 ony made the angle more comfortable. But the DS changed that by moving the buttons to slope the opposite way, and make that method virtually impossible.

And of course the Gamecube, which went back to the GBA style placement

See Bent gets it. It's kinda like the designers of Nintendo don't actually play on their own machines.

Err... except a lot of people hold their controllers under instead of from the side... specifically because if you hold it from underneath you can press any button combination with ease... If your thumb cross from the sides instead of the bottom it's because you have improper controller holding position (how do you even have room for your hands holding it that way? Do you fold your fingers over each other? Or are your hands really that small?)

You can't even HOLD a PS1/2/3 controller that way and still use it... It's not possible... I don't have an x-box controller for comparison... but I do know they are huge, maybe that's where so many people got their bad handling technique?

The gamecube is a whole different animal with its button layout, so it is hard to compare. Plus, for most games on the gamecube, they have done away with a run button, making the argument irrelivent. But for the few classic games that were released, I can think of one example that really messed with me, and that is Megaman Anniversary Collection. Since the A button is the big one in the middle, they made that the fire button, and made B jump, opposite of the original Megamans. And to top it all off, you can't change it. Why is having configurable controls so hard?

@koji2009

Not sure if you are addressing me or not, but I can assure you I have giant hands, my wedding ring is size 13. I am having trouble visualizing what you are saying, but I don't believe I hold my controller in an odd way. I have never played an xbox, only Nintendo stuff and Playstations. I am at work right now and can't show you how I hold controllers, but I would say it is in a 100% normal way for the size of my hands.

did you ever have a n64 controller in your hands?

They should have used the GC button places. Idc what ANYONE says that was with out a doubt the greatest Button scheme EVER.
Also, I dont care if you say nintendo are pros and shouldnt be making stupid mistakes but guess what, THEY ARE NOT FINISHED AND IT WAS FUCKING FREE. I grew up with GCN,N64,and SNES ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Its called adjustment, maybe if you people didnt act so much like fucking statues you would learn to adjust and stop finding bullshit to complain about, I mean button placement? Seriously? Its like I said about flash. If they changed it then you would find more stupid shit to fight about. Are you proud GBAtemp? 5 Fucking pages on A+B BUTTONS VS Y+B BUTTONS. God, This is almost as stupid as Coke vs Pepsi

Seconded, except for playing VC games on the Wii. I mean, has anyone here tried playing SMW on a GCN controller? Painful...

Then you got jipped, I'm getting 20 total legit roms.

I haven't a single problem with the button layout. I could see a problem if you'd just played the game on a SNES, but now it's a non issue.

Just saying I don't find it bad at all, if you play any of the current PSN of XBLA side scrolling games, the controls are quite similar.

Now this is funny. Nearly all games jump with X and shoot/run with square on PS3
