Lawbreakers developer teases new free to play "battle royale" game

Despite the commercial failure of developer Boss Key Production's competitive first-person shooter game "Lawbreakers", it seems the studio hasn't been deterred, as they'll be focusing on releasing a brand new game. Capitalizing on the huge popularity of PUBG and Fortnite, this new game, titled "Radical Heights", plans to follow that trend as well, and will be their take on the "battle royale" genre. Last week, Boss Key had reported that they were shifting focus from the dying Lawbreakers, and moving development onto a new game, which was to be expected. However, in a bit of a surprise, the company quickly announced that Radical Heights would be releasing on Steam/PC very shortly on April 10, 2018. The game is described as a shooter with a 1980s aesthetic. The full Steam description is below:

Welcome to RADICAL HEIGHTS, a free *X-TREME Early Access* BATTLE ROYALE shooter. Partake in high-stakes battle royale gunplay in a sunny SoCal dome as contestants drive-by on BMX bikes or stalk other contestants from the shadows in search for weapons and prizes...but also CASH that you can bank - win or lose! Whether you spend that cash on righteous customization in your personal prize room or pull it from an ATM to purchase weapons early in the next game -- building a wealth of cash is as important as taking down the competition in this irreverent 80s-themed action game show where everyone wants to be rich and famous!

Earlier today, an announcement trailer for the game went live, and quickly amassed far more dislikes than likes, and is currently sitting at a ratio of 500 likes and 1500 dislikes on YouTube. Radical Heights is set to release for free on Steam's Early Access program tomorrow, but for those who wish to spend money, there will be a $14.99 "founders pack".

They joined too late to the br party, and besides from all the clones already on the market, fortnite and pubg will be the only ones surviving a good chunk of years. Although fortnite is still taking the lead on most populated game of the two this far...

This just, this just looks bad, not even a good visual style, the gimmick is... and a pay to win game? hell no. They did everything wrong.

Ya, the br genre went too saturated way too fast, but it wont die anytime soon, at least not as single game mode from the chunk other games already have to offer.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Looks like hot garbage, just like PUBG and Fortnite. Bad shooting mechanics and one game mode = nothnx.
Woah woah i know you dislike br games as equals, but calling those two hot trash just like this one is beyond insanity.

Why are they chasing something that already exist and is oversaturated? Haven't they seen DayZ or H1Z1? They are dead... How the hell do they still have money to develop this game?

I dont think comparing PUBG and Fortnite means much when those two are the most popular games of 2017 and likely 2018. PUBG has not been below #1 on the steam charts for longer than 1 week since august 2017, and that was because of Far Cry 5.

Maybe every game that failed should reconsider making it into a battle royale. Paragon? Battleborn? :rofl2:

Before it was moba now, everyone's jumping into the battle royale genre.
Jokes on you, paragon wont resurect since same devs as fortnite and all the effort and time went to that one :P

Jeez no more battle royal games please...

I don't get the idea and craziness for those games...

Just make a bad performance game with bad graphics, bad physics, bad gameplay, put 100 players in the server killing each other until someone wins and boom now you have the most crazy stupid game ever :)

I hate those games with nothing to do, it's better to go play old BF3 or BF4 deathmatch and kill a hundred each round in a server with a lot of tickets...

To go against the notion here, just because you don't like the genre doesn't mean they should just die. I wonder how many people asking for the genre to die, actually played the games.
Also, I don't see how this genre is anymore saturated than any other popular genre right now. I mean, unlike a lot of other genres, this genre wasn't even that popular until recently.

Before it was moba now, everyone's jumping into the battle royale genre.
Inb4 they combine a moba and battle royale into one game.

Give it time. Like everything else, things die with time.
I'm just surprised this craze has lasted as long as it has.
It's not a new concept (i.e Minecraft Survival Games).

Whatever. I give it the rest of 2018 before it dies.
it will be killed by the next new hot genre that will be oversaturated, it's not like anything will improve fundamentally.

it was platformers, it was rts, it was clunky controller shooters, it was mmos, it was mobas, it was activity-littereled open world actions, it was card games, it was ability-based shooters, now it's battle royale

i dont think you are ever escaping the cycle of having one current saturated meme genre that every developer latches on to in the hopes it replicates whoever the top dog is at the time despite not actually having a good idea to fit it.

One thing I hope to see from all this is robust higher count multiplayer server architecture. If this little fad's only contribution to the world is such a thing then I am more than OK with that.

Anyway as far as "oversaturated" then meh. Quality can always win out. I have seen nothing here that makes me think it will be, but unlike times people went in for the DOTA/MOBA fad where the clone devs completely missed the point and did not try to make a good game (as well as listening to the idiots claiming that last hitting, stacking and whatnot was an essential mechanic) I am not seeing the obvious downfalls.

Or if you prefer
2001-2002 What does this new dev making a world war 2 fps in the quake 3 engine think they are doing? Don't they know quake and unreal tournament is a thing? Said game was call of duty.
Same timeframe also saw some upstart European devs use their own engine to try to make another world war 2 game... it would become battlefield 1942.

Unreal and Quake basically were multiplayer shooters at the time. Almost unassailable they were. That said the previous years had seen Counter Strike and Team Fortress rise from bloody game mods. What chances of that were there?

I don't think it will succeed. Once a style of game is established, momentum will carry the earlier titles to success unless a new competitor comes in with a really novel twist. It doesn't look like Radical Heights will do that.

That being said, it appeals to me personally more than PUBG or Fortnite. I don't like the building in Fortnite and I don't like the realistic art-style of PUBG (and it's not free).

I'm really sad about Lawbreakers, though. Honestly, the concept was amazing and it was pretty darn fun when I got to play it over the free weekends. I wish it had gotten a bigger following, but Nexon was not a good publisher to partner with if you want to make a competitive game...

Could be fun if they somehow incorporated the zero gravity effect and had a smaller map. More fast paced then PUBG and Fortnite.

the legal drinking age here in the US is 21, as some of you may know, but i think either it should be 18 or the age you're an adult should be 21.

  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and i know what you may be thinking, "why become an adult at 21? doesn't that mean that banging an 18 year old would be illegal?"
first of all, being in a relationship with someone who's 18 is technically ok, as long as it started when they were 18, but the age gap is still weird depending on how old you are. besides, the age of consent differs between different states
    +1
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
also my reasoning for adult age being 21 is because the reason that's the drinking (and now smoking) age is because it "gives them more time to think rationally and not drive drunk"
so you should have that extra time to mature and think rationally before going to serve in the military or vote

  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
tl;dr the "adult" age and the legal drinking age (and voting age) here in the US should be the same

What about making kids wait till 18 or 21 to drive? And yea is messed up, you can join army and die for your country at age 18, but you can't drink alcohol or smoke a cig til 21, is ridiculous

If someone is in the military they should be allowed to smoke and drink at 18.... Would help drive recruitment lol

We all know they do and will anyways. I think laws prevented them only pushes them to illegally do it. Even tho if was legal, most prob wouldn't even bother. Not a big deal or risque if its legal, no fun.

also, i think the voting age should match the adult and drinking ages too, because by the logic of giving them time to mature and think rationally so they don't drive drunk, then they should also have that time to mature and think rationally so they can think for themselves
