Journey, with no relation to the band, is the first video game to get nominated for a Grammy and will be contending in the 55th Annual Grammy Awards.

The award for "Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media", which apparently encompasses video games now, has some pretty stiff competition. Among them is John Williams (known for composing some of the most iconic soundtracks such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones) for Adventures of Tintin, Ludovic Bource for the recent silent film The Artist, Hans Zimmer (known for his infamous "BWAAAAAAHHHMM"s) for Dark Knight Rises, Trent Reznor (the man behind Nine Inch Nails) and Atticus Ross (who previously collaborated with Reznor for The Social Network soundtrack) for The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo, Howard Shore for Martin Scorsese's Hugo, and of course Austin Wintory for Journey.
Video game music has been receiving some more recognition in the more mainstream awards, with the song "Baba Yetu" from Sid Meier's Civilization IV winning one at the 53rd Grammys. However, the song was also available outside the video game, appearing on composer Christopher Tin's own debut album, and thus Journey gets the recognition as the first video game to be nominated by name.
Journey was released early this year for the Playstation 3. Similar to other works by Thatgamecompany, such as Flow and Flower, the game is almost not a video game, but more of an interactive piece. In the game, a player simply takes control of a robed figure as they walk across the desert to the location of a fallen star. The game is notable for having its music respond to the player based on their actions, possibly helping net the nomination.

As nice as the soundtrack may be, I'm sure that this is more of a token nomination than anything else. But hey, the developers shouldn't feel too glum; the Journey is its own reward.

it was the fact that baba yetu was featured in civ v that got it the grammy nom a couple years ago. the album is older than the game. so, journey is not the first video game to get grammy recognition.

Amazing game! It's very short though but has great replay value. The multiplayer is great and the way you communicate with the other player is very unique. I highly recommend this game if you have a PS3!
I already 100%'d it on PS3 and got the white cape. Definitely one of my favorite games of all time!

Baba Yetu was recognized as a song, Journey is being recognized as a game. Or Baba Yetu the song got recognition, not the entirety of Civ V

Journey is not being recognized as a game either; the music of a game is being recognized and it's not the first time such a thing has happened.

Holy fucking shitballs can it with fucking Xenoblade. No one gives a single shit about this stupid JRPG.

Bastion should've won a fucking Grammy but I don't wank on about it.
Stop getting all pissy. People are mentioning Xenoblade because the music in the game is good.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Unless sharing opinions that you disagree with is wrong now.

It's just every thread it's "XENOBLADE SHOULD'VE WON THIS" or "IT SHOULD'VE WON THAT."

Like can't we just appreciate Journey for its accomplishment? People loved the game and it was quite inventive. Can't we just applaud instead of making this another Xenoblade circlejerk?

>Journey getting nominated for a Grammy Award

(Big ass space, you get this idea, to separate these two ideas.)

>Xenoblade.

Considering all the other games with fantastic music and you think Xenoblade should get something... Seriously? how about any number of final fantasies, Skyrim, Twilight Princess, or uh CHRONO TRIGGER? But no none of them did, this has nothing to do with xn0bl4d3, its about Journey getting a Grammy.

Which is huge.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
  • DinohScene @ DinohScene:

    It's always worth a shot

@The Real Jdbye, I considered that, but i'll have to wait until i can get the eu version in the mail lol
