Just to let you guys know (the translation team), I've got about 30 hours of gameplay in at this point, and I've said to myself a few times, "There's no way in hell I could've gotten through that battle without the translation patch."

I was unfortunate enough to be in a non-console situation for the original FFIV releases, so this is my first time playing through this one, and it's one of the best games I've ever played.

I just wanted you guys to know that you've allowed an old gamer to enjoy this fantastic game. Your work is honestly and truly appreciated. Every iteration makes this game more accessible and enjoyable.

Comments like this always make my day. I'm glad that our patch is appreciated. A lot of hard work went into it, so it's good to know that it's being put to good use.

Belmont, I also realized that I kept saying 'word bank' when I meant 'text bank'. The text bank is more like DQ4 where the sentences are all clearly separated. Word bank is more like my Lufia example. My bad again.

I know alot of games use a text bank, meaning most of the text is in the same area of the cart. I remember trying to hack YuGiOh, and couldn't even find the right table to 'visualize' the font. I was mostly hacking using the DOS editor and using a program to change the ASCII codes to change it into a table that would be visible like that. Yeah, terribly inconvenient but I didn't know any better back then, hah.

Most games aren't in ASCII I think, DQ4 was a small surprise for me because of that. CHR 42 =/= A most of the time, so that font editor was the only way I had to 'visualize' the character table, and just finding it was a pain in itself most of the time.

And YuGiOh seemed even worse because they had a variable font size depending on the amount of text, because of that I never managed to find where the text was stored, and had to give it up. So yes, I never meant to say hacking and translating is easy. At least when it's in english it's a bit easier to find the table. In Japanese I had no tools to find it, or at least was missing the knowledge to do it myself

Eww...I remember using thingy for DOS back in the day. Luckily, the text in FFIV is stored in the default Windows Unicode characters. So a table file isn't really neccessary. Still, the fact that a Unicode character takes up 2 bytes per letter is major suck.

DSFanboy just linked the wiki. I expect more traffic.
While I'm glad that they've decided to share our patch with the world, I wish they'd do their research first...

Impatient fans have been translating the game's script since the 3D remake's release last month, and they have already released a "semi-final beta" translation patch with most of the story and description text now in English!
Oh...my...god. Won't somebody think of the angry fanboys?! I've sent them a letter notifying them of the error so hopefully they'll fix it ASAP.

I was wondering if anyone out there can give me some help/advice. My new R4 arrived yesterday and I am having a miserable time trying to load the ROM and english patch and getting it to run. I have tried a number of different things and my DS keeps coming up with a black screen saying that it cannot find_DS_MENU.DAT. As I said, my R4 is brand new and I'm wondering if the problem is with the firmware or my lack of experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! My AOL IM is Ashcroft2000. Thanks again.

Okay, I got the R4 loaded and I think I am close to getting the FF IV ROM with the english patch to work. I saved the english patch into the same GAMES folder as the ROM and I clicked on the bat file. It then created a patch file but it was
0 kb. It also has the original NDS file and it says that one is 0 kb as well. I went to run the game off my flash card and it said that all of the files were there, but it had two white screens and nothing loaded. I assume that since both the patch file and the original NDS file say 0 kb the problem is with those files. It seems like some other people on this forum had the same problem. Can anyone tell me how they solved it? I think I am very close to getting this right. Again, my AOL IM is Ashcroft2000 or you can post on here. Thank you for your help!!!

Glad to hear that you were able to make it work lacedolphin. Hopefully someone can give me an idea of what I am doing wrong. I've got everything set up but for some reason the game will not load.

I think they key is to only have certain files in the folder with your rom. Then, hit the right program icon to get it to run and make sure the file is the right size ( that it went like it was supposed to) before transfering. Heres how I did it:

Make a new empty folder on my desktop.
Placed clean rom in the folder ( copy/paste so I still had a clean rom in case I messed up,lol)
Extracted patch files in the folder.
Hit the xdelta MS-DOS icon.
Made sure the patched.nds file that came up was the correct size before transferring. If it comes up too small just delete or drag to recycle bin and try again.

Hope that helps. Now, if I could only get the other patch to work! That one has me baffled.

I just saw your previous post. None of mine said 0, you may want to check your rom and make sure its clean and working. It should be 131 thousand and something file size before running the patch.

Oh snap! double edit! Your problem isn't patch related, your missing a main file for your R4. I don't have AIM yet, but I'll try to get it on here and IM you. You need to hold off on the patch thing until you can get the R4 working correctly.

Thanks Lacedolphin. I finally got it to work a short while ago. I ended up needing to download a clean version and repeat all of the steps with the English patch. The English patch now works great. I think I've got the latest v.99 and that should be fine. I'll wait until the last version comes out and then I will probably try to reinstall. Many thanks to the team for doing such a wonderful job--it is great being able to enjoy FF IV like this. Thank you again for your help!!!

I can't seem to get the patch to fully work. I patched two clean versions of FFIV and neither of them patched correctly I found that some menus and options had been translated but the bulk of the text had not patched into english. Namely the game script.

Anyone got any suggestions on how I can get it to work?

I'm also wondering this. Was it not translated? Rather useless translation in that case? Oh well :'(

What ever happened to people reading? I miss that so much.
What happened to people being nice and cheerful?
Actually I just read something few pages back about them not translating the story. Some technicalities were hindering them or whatever. Still where's the point in spending 9000 hours on something as trivial as a few menus and names in game in a series of twelve, where all the menus and names are pretty much the same, where the one most important thing seperating the games apart is the story. Allright so I'll wait until the english release. I have no problem with that, I probably would anyway because well I'm a sucker for polished games. What I just dont get is why this waste of time?
