ROM Hack I'm making a FFIV translation patch...

What ever happened to people reading? I miss that so much.

What happened to people being nice and cheerful?
Actually I just read something few pages back about them not translating the story. Some technicalities were hindering them or whatever. Still where's the point in spending 9000 hours on something as trivial as a few menus and names in game in a series of twelve, where all the menus and names are pretty much the same, where the one most important thing seperating the games apart is the story. Allright so I'll wait until the english release. I have no problem with that, I probably would anyway because well I'm a sucker for polished games. What I just dont get is why this waste of time?

It's Final Fantasy 4. Some of us already know the story like the back of our hands, and some of us have already played it through once in full Japanese because that's how much we like this game.

Having things like spells, items and decant abilities translated is all someone like me really needs to sit down and beat the crap out of this game. If you've never played FF4 before then maybe you should play the GBA one?

I agree Jemmalen. Given that there isn't even a release date established for the english version of FF IV DS, this patch is a tremendous asset. From what BelmontSlayer has indicated, the script has not changed at all. If reading the script is that important to you, print out the FF IV GBA script and follow along while you play. It really isn't that difficult. Not having to struggle through the item, weapon and spell menus has been a great asset and I am grateful for all of the hard work that went into this patch. I just received my R4 yesterday and I spent all of this afternoon enjoying one of the greatest games ever made. Dialogue or no dialogue--this english patch is great.

I've been trying all day to figure out the basic story as I never played the gba version. That was a great idea. Find an old gba version walkthrough or storyline breakdown to get me unstuck so I'm not roaming around like a moron. Geez, why didn't I think of that!

That was a serious "duh" moment.

Ok, today I qualify for moron status.

Hey there, just chiming in to say great work on the patch, and good luck for the rest of the translating. To let you know, your work is well appreciated and I'm looking forward to the final version. Thanks a tonne.

As much as I'd love to see the full dialogue translated, I know that its a hacking nightmare.

There is a team doing a full translation of Mother 3, or Earthbound 2, and they have to basically recode the way text is shown, which requires alot of rom hacking. This leads to technical issues and mess. Check this youtube to see all the glitches they have: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R7kdGjYeks

I don't think I'll play this patch though. I would love to read the subtitles as I watch the voiced dialogue sequences, since those scenes would be one of my major reasons for playing again. Since they can't be translated easy, and veering to another screen or piece of paper would eliminate the whole experience, I'll just wait I guess.

Regardless of all that, I was thoroughly impressed at how fast this menu translation got to where it is now. Great to see that kind of dedication.

Yes, i'm playing it rather easily now due to the menu translations. It's much harder when you can't see what you're using. Thanks a lot! I miss some story, but it's worth it.

The menu translation is more than enough until a US release in my opinion. If we learn in the future that for some weird reason we're not getting it in English at all, there's bound to be groups that will translate the rest. Considering most of the text and context are already widely known due to previous, all that would be left is actual hacking to make the text show up.

That doesn't mean the task will be any easier though.

But the same logic applies to this current patch. If you already know the story, there's not THAT much added to the original dialogs, so having the menus and such done is already more than enough. Having the full game translated will just be cake.

have you guys ran into a snag in the translation?

not that it matters any, the game is totally beatable with the current patch.

you guys said your not doing the dialog why dont you switch the dialog with the dialog of the gba script and another queston whats a estamated time when the 100% translation going to be released.

and also just to say thanks for translation so far

No u did not do something wrong.
The Patch only translates the menu, Items ect.
This helped me a lot to play this Game, so i Thank you.

Hey, wait... I just checked the wiki, and it says the English of... Whatever it [Float] is in Japanese, is Levitate. When, in an English FF, has the spell been called Levitate? I've ALWAYS heard it as Float.

Oh ok, so why they name this project as FINAL FANTASY TRANSLATION PATCH and not Final Fantasy ENGLISH MENU patch.
There's a big difference of English Translation patch to MENU translation. Sorry to offend you guys. But I was fooled by "v0.99"
Because in the past rom translation group like DEJAP or AEON GENISIS. when you say 0.99 ITS ALMOST FINISH INCLUDING SCRIPT. and minor bugs to be fix to make it v1.0

and if you only translate the menu and items etc. blah blah blah its only 0.5 to 0.15

I miss the old snes roms translation group.

This isn't an SNES translation group. DS Hacking is much more difficult than older systems. You'll probably won't find a complete translation for a DS game, so you'd better stop trying. If it really bothers you, try translating everything yourself.

You obviously didn't read this whole thread, it's been stated more than once that there is no plans to translate the script. If you want an english script for a game over a decade old, then go find the GBA/SNES Script and work with that.

Other than that, stop complaining.

Don't take it seriously, I'm NOT complaining about the project. for WHAT im complaining is "THE NAME OF THE PROJECT and V0.99" If the author just make it a LITTLE clear to anyone that this is a ONLY menu translation project, I think there's no one like me complaining. (IF HE ONLY SAID IT ON THE FIRST PAGE OR ON THE README FILE)

AND I DON'T PLAN to make a patch because I can sit here and relax til the authentic rom from Square-Enix come.

Sorry but I'm depress about this. My first impression about this project is "W0W thats too quick its already 0.99"

And now im talking to my self and said. "useless, anyone could try this game, easily finds where the FIGHT, MAGIC and ITEMS. Even if its jap. LOL

Actually before the first image crashed there was an image with the % of every part of the menu translated.

Since there was no % for the script u could assume that it wasnt a script translation... or just read the whole thing to check.

Hi guys.

1) I've been away, and will continue to be for another week. Belmont and Stone Sword have lives too I'm afraid, so we are currently in the middle of a short reprieve. Fret not, it shall end soonish.

2) I'm sorry that a small amount of you were mislead by the title (read:one guy). We are translating, and it is a patch, so I think the name is fine

. "Menu Translation Patch" isn't doing our work justice, since we have done menus, items, spells, weapons/armor descriptions of the afore mentioned, monster names, and will soon have just one more thing done. If this still doesn't conform to your beliefs on what makes a Translation Patch, I have a grand idea. I'll divide it into steps to make it easy on you
A) Download the zip file with the translation patch
B) Left-click the zip file and hit F2
C) Type in whatever name floats your boat. Simple! You could even call it "STFU kn0b" if you so desired!

3) Instead of complaining about the lack of dialog translation, just do it yourself! It's as easy as replacing it with GBA script, right?
