Welcome to the semi-final release of the translation patch for Final Fantasy IV DS.
Why attempt such a project some might ask? Well, FFIV was thefirst FF game I ever played.
The memorable pixelated scenes are forever etched into my memory.

The original project was founded by none other than myself, BelmontSlayer. After starting
to translate the menus I decided to post a topic about the project on GameFAQs. The mods
deleted it in less than five minutes and left all the fanboys in tears. So what did I do?
Why I posted it on GBAtemp instead!

After dozens of posts of support I received an IM
from a forum user who called himself Jisteatin. He explained to me that he had some
experience with ROM hacking and would like to help out in anyway possible. After that
another GBAtemp user Raganook contacted me. He was much more skilled in Japanese that
myself and with our combined teamwork we starting releases our patches one after another.
Thus was the formation of "the team". We spent countless hours translating and hacking to
bring you this release. I hope you enjoy it!

+--------------+
|How To Install|
+--------------+
1)Extract the files contained
in the .zip to the same folder
as the FFIV DS ROM. Make sure
that there are no other ROMs in
the folder!

2)Run xdelta.bat and wait until
the black prompt disappears.

3)Put the newly created nds file
patched.nds onto your flashcart.

4)Enjoy!

Doink - For creating the FFIV
DS translation wiki.

94dan - For suggesting that I
go back to the ye olde style
spells for a cleaner look.

Carisear - For identifying a
typo in the weapon names.

B4mV - For correcting us on a
typo on boss names. Demon Wall
is not Leviathan.

GBAtemp - For not deleting my
topic for "illegal activities"
like the asshats at GameFAQs did.

FF4.WIKIDOT.COM - For providing a
wealth of information and hosting
the project page.

You - For actually reading this
gigantic wall of text...or did
you just skip to the end?

how did you get to the text files i cant find them

There are no "text files". Most of the text is stored inside of .msd files which can be read in any hexeditor that supports Unicode. The files themselves are called:
babil_ability.msd
babil_battle.msd
babil_common.msd
babil_item.msd
babil_menu.msd

...and so on.

If you wanted to even do the story, I bet it wouldn't be hard. the entire games script is already translated in the GBA version.

Is it possible to extract the english text from the gba version and put it in the nds version?
That would save alot of time and work translating the rom.

I'm working on the FFTA2 translation. Most notably I translated all of the laws.

But dfeufeu made it really easy on us. He gave us charts of text, we translated them, then gave it back to him.

So thats the experience I have with translating. Hacking? Zero.

The actual translation shouldn't be hard since we already have the US GBA script transcribed. From what I've heard, a lot of the script has stayed exactly the same.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/929937/40689

I can start a Wiki and get a bunch of folks working on it if you want.

I ran the FF III DS one and we had the event scenes and all the descriptions translated within a week of the Japanese release.

That sounds like a great idea. I'm currently having some trouble due to text character limitations but I'm working on a solution. Expect a beta in 1-2 days with a couple of menus translated.

Definitely keeping watch on this.

I'd help but I don't have any good hex editors (all the ascii displays incorrectly usually) and outside of being able to unpack and repack a rom I can't do much else.

emulation isn't telling the silicon to perform a specific way, it's just translating the commands into something the cpu can understand

    fpga runs them natively
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
and i assume there is a level of verification that is not possible with emulation since you can actually probe the pins to verify that it behaves the exact same as real hardware
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so it's easier to get it 1:1
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
there aren't even virtual pins with emulation that you could "probe", it doesn't go that deep
