this topic really makes no sense the title says how to tell of the dstt is a fake without opening it and all of the pictures that are being shown are pictures of oped dstt's
As I've described here, I recently got 2 fake cards and could clearly determine they were fake merely looking from the outside. I have never opened my cards. The distinguishing feature on fake dstt cards is the leftside (with the gold connectors facing you) stepped metal edge on the SD guide. Genuine cards do not have that stepped edge. The SD metal face guide is also straight edged on the fakes rather than curved on the genuine cards but that straight/curved edge is hard to see. I can see that leftside step clearly on my fake cards viewing from the outside.Bri said:

Even if you're unable to see the stepped edge of the of the SD holder, the potition of the white lines described in this picture is a sure way to tell if you have a fake or not, beause all legit cards look exactly like the dstt on the left and not one single fake does.

I ordered on the 26th of November. They said it shipped on the 3rd of December. I hope that long delay before shipping was so they could make sure they had their sh*t straight before sending any more out.
Just to confirm: Did anyone place an order AFTER November 19th (the date that they posted they they're manually inspecting each one) and still get a fake?

I ordered mine on 23rd Nov, waited a few days for stock to arrive, waited just 2 days for shipping(very fast!)
Sadly my fake arrived today.
Old style packaging, so I managed to prise it open and it is clearly a fake according to the TT site and others here.
I was able to look inside using a torch and a jeweller's loupe (one of those "shove it next to your eye" magnifying glasses, and could see the "two pronged" part of the card holder frame. It might be possible to do the same with a magnifying, to save opening it up as it was pretty hard to do.
Lets see what DX have to say.

5 Hours after I told them I had a fake I got this.....
"A free replacement unit has been processed for you and you will receive an email when it ships. You can keep your existing unit without returning it to us -- feel free to find a use for it.
You can track the replacement using your existing order number."
Fair enough. As long as I get a real one before Christmas.
The one ordered is clearly a fake in the photo on their website (the one that comes with a reader) I wish I'd researched before ordering.

Don't worry about it being fake, just run 1.15 on it, it only runs 1 game less a japanese one. In the future just use one the updated firmwares if it's needed for the blatant fakes/copies, U2 CHN-DSTT.

Well I can confirm that I got a real DSTT. Not a fake DSTT. It was however defective. It freezes at the health & Safety screen. I contacted them on Friday, so I hope I receive a response by Friday.
Recently, it seems like the people who just recieved their DSTT have gotten ones that are defective. i opened mine up and it seemed like it was real but it just stays at the loading screen.
I got my second one today and am happy to say this one was real

I thought the new ones are supposed to be black? And that looks ridiculous that the mem card sticks out like that!supermoose said:
Surely genuine cards would not be that bad quality? I know your mem slot is on the other side etc, but could it be that the fake card manufacturers have already changed their design?
I've notice that the sticker on the real cards are different to the ones on the fakes, the two cards on the left are real and one one on the right is fake.

yea i had the one supermoose had with the memory card sticking out, it didn't look good at all. Plus, it didn't even work, it would get stuick on the loading screen. Dealextreme is sending me a brand new one though.
There are now two companies making the claim to making the real card. On the CN-DSTT website, they claim to be the real DSTT, with the cards called as fake on dstt.com website being called real, and the ones called real there being called fake. The opposite is true on the other website.
CN-DSTT also claim to have split from the original company in September, and on their Anti-fake [sic] website, they post a statement in poorly worded Engrish, and I think I can attempt to translate.
Here is my interpretation of their words:
"In the near future discovered in the market appears pretends the DSTT fever to record the card, DSTT official informs specially:"
Recently it was discovered that the makers of fake (i.e., DSTT) overheat our product (and damage them). The following is the position of the real DSTT manufacturers (i.e., us, CN-DSTT):
"DSTT innovates unceasingly in the standard edition foundation, just had issued the new Jan justification. At present the standard edition and the Jan justification also supply goods, and will continue will maintain period of time, provides to the user more choices!"
CN-DSTT make constant changes to our packaging and just changed it to the new packaging in January. At present both the old standard paper packaging and new January packaging are being made available and will continue to be so. This provides to the user more choices.

The pretend card makers want to save money, and can only make the product available in the new packaging, and as a result are making the absurd claim that the outward apperance of packaging is important. The pretend card makers also can't keep up with demand, and therefore are shipping defective products to the user, of which a high percentage are being sent back for repairs. We ask the users to pay attention to the difference between our products.

CN-DSTT will provide the dependable quality product as always to the user, and our software won't overheat the product.
Quite an interesting take on the situation, but I don't buy the CN-DSTT story at all. If you look at the GBAtemp review of DSTT from December 2007 (when the card was too new for anyone to make a fake) found at http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=69748, you clearly see in the photo that the MicroSD card slot is curved and not stair stepped, and it does not have the two prongs in the middle. The card is of an otherwise older configuration, with no divot in the PCB, and a straight back side of the plastic case. This is the version of DSTT I have at home, and the white lines on the PCB along the front of the MicroSD card slot seem match the older pictures on the DSTT website for the real product (with the angled line set back a bit). Since the old model is glued shut, I can't open it, but looking at it head on, the MicroSD slot edge appears curved and not stair stepped. I also have been running firmware 1.16 on it for a while (which allegedly contains the fake killer code), and my card has not fried.
That being said, there may be a small grain of truth to the CN-DSTT claim of a difference in quality. Taking a look at the reports on Dealextreme SKU 15613 , there appear to be few more defective card stories with the new DSTT version, but none in the CN-DSTT product (i.e, Dealextreme SKU 18119). But I'd always feel more comfortable DSTT than CN-DSTT products. Whether CN-DSTT was one of the previous factories that made the original DSTT and have split up with them in September remains to be seen.
My recent order for the card was unfortunately for SKU 10289, that is the no-man's land product. I suspect I will either be getting an hand checked old stock genuine DSTT (although I highly doubt it) or a new stock fake CN-DSTT (a lot more likely). If it's the former, I'll happily run DSTT firmware 1.16 on it without any fears. If it's the latter, I plan to complain to DX. If I get to keep the card instead of having to ship it back, I will most definately not be running 1.16 from DSTT on it. It'll probably be 1.15 from the DSTT or 1.16 from CNDSTT, as I don't want any "fever to be recorded" to my product.
