How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

5. Play Newer Wii Games, Gamecube games and Install USB Loader GX

Follow Aces instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

PS: Just so you know - I tried it myself. If you WiiWare wasn't working through emuNAND. Look in USBLoader GX - Settings - Credits, if your using the 'cIOS249-d2x-v10-beta52' it will not work! Go ahead and install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad using Step 5 in this guide. Then Wiiware works. :)

Fix Blackscreen with VC in emuNAND
Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

Hi Stephanie!

I'm having a bit of trouble too, and was hoping you might be kind enough to help me! I posted about getting black screens in this thread, but you seem to be the expert at explaining GC backup loading :)

I managed to get system information using both methods you mentioned above. Your link to Syscheck 1.6.2 crashed my system repeatedly though. I had to use SyscheckHDE, as i note Seth used.

From USB Loader GX - Settings - Credits:
DIOS MIOS v2.11+ (I *think* it says "+", but screen res not great. It says *something* though)
Rev 1230
IOS249 (Rev 21008) +AHB
(d2x v8final base56)
From Syscheck:
SysCheck v2.3.0 HacksDen Edition by JoostinOnline Double_A R2-D2199 and Nano
...runs on IOS58 (rev 6176).

Region: PAL (original region: AUS)

Homebrew Channel 1.1.2 running on IOS58

I'd love some help, if you have any idea what I should do now!

Thank you!

EDIT: oh, and I am using the DarkWii Orange system menu, if that's not recorded somewhere above.

EDIT: Does it matter what crap is left on my SD card? I can boot apps from the homebrew channel off it just fine, and it's formatted right.

PARTIAL FIX: I got Wind Waker to work using nothing more than clever alliteration! I finally found a PAL region copy, and using DMLizard 4.0 GCReEx method! I will update as things progress. I really want to get Wave Race and the Resident Evil games other than RE4 working! :)

:( Sadly it seems I cannot get a PAL copy of Wave Race working though

Stephanie, where did you get IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad? In another thread you said DMLizard downloaded it for you? It doesn't do so for me. Can i use the cIOS249[56]-d2x-v8-final.wad that ModMii fetches for me?

not gonna go through all these posts , but , have any of you used the modmii intaller ? t makes shit much easier
Yes, i used it. Should using that methods gamecube backups from USB without further modification? If so, how? And how do you get the gamecube games on to the USB correctly?

Failing that, will the ModMii method let you play gamecube backup discs? How?

Sorry for being such a noob, i'm desperate to get a few GC titles running somehow is all

we explained this before. Yes, modmii, works. but so does a video tutorial of the steps + this one includes the most important factors . playing/using wii games, usb loaders and game cube and wiiware games.

there's no 'method' at all for gamecube games.

U install iosPatched files.
U use an usb loader
U install a d2x file
U install a diosmios + rvl file.

boom. gamecube games works as so does all wii games.

U install emunand on usb loaders and showwiiwads on PC
boom you can play any wiiware , virtual console games you want.

.easy.

Very simply . My guide does what ModMii does + the games part.

And no. Im not a expert in this field. I just know what to do to make your Wii play games, and help with easier problem(s).

I actually checked out DMToolbox - the files it produces are identical to Gcreex, in *most* cases. Nothing made by discEX will even boot on mine. And i thought the RVL-mios-v10.wad was only if you needed to go back to booting burned backup discs?

On the other hand, after going through your four steps again:
U install iosPatched files.
U use an usb loader
U install a d2x file
U install a diosmios + rvl file.

I can get i can actually get Windwaker to work without a disc in the drive at all. I can get RE Remake (disc 1) to load with a Wii disc in, using the files create by DMToolbox, rather than GCreex. I just can't get Wave Race going to save myself! I've been trying for days, and i thank you for the guide and the replies you've given me. They have helped me understand something of what's going on - i think! Hopefully i can figure this out somehow :)

EDIT: perhaps interestingly, Wave Race gets a DIOS MIOS splash screen without a disc in the drive, but instantly blackscreens with one.

Sadly i don't think the blackscreens he's talking about are the same. And my usb drive works fine for WindWaker and RE Remake. With a retail Wii disc in, Wave Race the screen oges black and i have to hold the power button to get the system to turn off. Without a disc in, the DIOS MIOS splash comes up, and then the screen goes black, and i only have to touch the power stud once to get it to turn the system off.

Either way it just goes black, no sound or anything. But you might be right, because Wave Race has sound issues no matter what you do. Thank you for the info, and for trying to help. May the universe reward your kindness :)

I have got a burned disc backup of Wave Race working now, which is better than nothing. I'll keep going on the DIOS MIOS stuff, trying other drives, etc.

And for the record, the RVL-cMIOS-v65535(v10)_WiiGator_WiiPower_v0.2.wad from ModMii seems to be an acceptable MIOS v10 to launch gamecube discs with :) At least partly created by WiiPower, and works fine for me with Neogamma

There is alot of complications w gamecube games.
... i know you dont say so, but if you have a pen usb stick or ect, try it.
it could be the usb drive .

Yes i have; pretty much the same results as with USB :)
did you try dml auto ?

"If the game freeze on a green or black screen, but the game is playing (you can push buttons, hear music, etc. just no visual), then it's a video mode problem.
What is the config of your Wii?

The "DML AUTO" is checking both the game region and the Wii setting.

if you are on a PAL Wii, set to 50Hz, then the USB loader will set DIOS MIOS (Lite) in 50Hz!
If inside the game you choose "60Hz", it will not work fine.
If the game is ONLY 60Hz (Metroid prime), it will not work either.

You need to set the Wii video setting correctly or force the correct video mode.
