I have some BFSTM files from a game that I own and I'd like to be able to listen to them on my computer. In order to do that, I guess that I need to convert them to MP3 or WAV. Or perhaps there is a program which can decode them and let me listen to them without having to do a bulk-conversion. Does anyone know of a program which can do either of these tasks? All I want is to listen to these files.

Probably the best way is to use an audio player that implements the vgmstream library: https://github.com/kode54/vgmstream

The VGAudio .NET library also supports bfstm: https://github.com/Thealexbarney/VGAudio

I have a program called Looping Audio Converter (https://github.com/libertyernie/LoopingAudioConverter) that uses VGAudio and lets you batch convert the files, but it's not really built for playing them.

Thank you for creating and linking me to Looping Audio Converter. It seems to work well, but there were a few bugs. If I tried to export MP3 files with all channels in one file, I would get error messages about not being able to read some files and it would eventually crash with a popup saying something like "LAME quit with exit code 1." This may simply be LAME's fault or Windows'. But, exporting MP3s with each pair of channels in its own file worked perfectly. Moreover, I was able to get all channels in one file when I exported to WAV instead of MP3. I can convert the WAVs to MP3 using another program, so this isn't a big problem for me.

The other libraries which you mention are cool, but I'd rather not use command-line utilities when there is an equally good and easier-to-use graphical alternative. I couldn't find any programs which use those libraries aside from yours anyway, so I guess your program was my only recourse other than command-line voodoo. Despite the bugs, your program works well enough for my needs. Thank you!

Music players like Foobar2000, Winamp or XMplay with the vgmstream plugin work very well for me.
They can even play under specific conditions like loops or infinitely, if you want to.

I recommend them.

Could you offer any installation instructions for said plugin? I looked on the purported website for "help and newest builds," but I'm not altogether clear on what needs to be done to get this plugin working with these programs.

Depending on what you use, latest builds can be found there.

Winamp and XMplay versions are the easiest to use. Just copy the zip content from the winamp and xmplay download to the program folder and it will be detected automatically in the settings.
Or install the Foobar2000 component like any others, if you already used it.

Ok, I'll try that out. Thank you for the info!

I use Components in Foobar2000 for all my video game music listening needs. I'm trying to stray from using mp3s and use brstms instead. @libertyernie you ever gonna update LoopingAudioConverter to where I can actually make custom loops? That would be great! I want to move on from using BrawlBox since it's brokenish right now.

If you select "ask for all files" from the drop-down menu below "keep as non-looping", it should ask you for each file what loop points you want. (It actually just uses the same dialog that BrawlBox does.)

There is another fork of BrawlBox, by the way, called StageBox - it's based off a slightly older BrawlBox but also includes some newer changes, and it's more actively maintained.

@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though

    I appreciate the insight!

@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
