was just wondering what the better option was overall or what the pros/cons would be. gonna be in surgery in a month and i was warned my hospital is pretty boring . (just crt tvs lol)

hoping theres a decent snes choice cause i'll have lots of time to play rpgs

I personally prefer using a PSP for retro emulation as i could never get emulation working right on my 3DS but if you’re after SNES games i wouldn’t recommend using a PSP as they are slow and have a lot of compatibility issue to either it being to laggy or it won’t even load

i'd recommend a new 3ds since virtual console injects are far better then any homebrew emulators available on both platforms, also backwards compatible with ds games/homebrew/emulators using a flashcart. get a psp for homebrew emulators/games/apps and ps1 support.

are the retail new 3ds still hackable?
Yes, but if it's on 11.4 or higher you'd need to either buy a compatible flashcart and use ntrboot, or update to 11.6 and use seedminer (costs about $2). There's currently no free way to use homebrew.

Edit: just to clarify, ntrboot also works on 11.6. It works on any 3DS/2DS, on any firmware version (since it's a bootrom flaw)

New 3DS by far. it runs most retro nintendo games (up to snes, cant do n64) and many other assorted consoles. basically, once you hit 3d consoles its over. PS1 games kind of work, 20-40 fps and even worse with sound. However gba works perfectly if you inject the right CIA's from a certain ISo site that may start with 3ds and end in iso. and same with snes, nes, gb, gbc. and get freeshop bc you can download all the old sonic games and basically all of segas greatist hits.PSP can do ps1 games though so keep that in mind. and you specified snes, there are toooooons of snes games on the 3ds. even more on that iso site i mentioned. all the big rpg's like mario and chrono trigger, and more.

3DS native vertical resolution is basically the same as retro home consoles. (240p) PSP is slightly taller at 272p so things might be small at native compared to an XL. Supposedly the ghosting on PSP is pretty strong, but TN 3DS seem to have their fair share too, which can make seeing tiny projectiles in some sidescrollers harder than it should be. 3DS in 2D mode have visible borders between pixels only vertically on the top screen, creating a kind of "natural scanline" effect, which might be desirable for imitating CRT feel.

Bubble's SNES and Genesis emulators seem to run almost everything well even on old 3DS, although there tend to be annoying compromises in sound accuracy. SNES VC is super-accurate, but doesn't support many special chips like the Super FX, and needs a New model. Either one will do a better job than PSP on SNES though.

You can run GBA games natively (like a DS game) on 3DS if you inject them into VC. If you want emulator convenience though, I think PSP's gpsp kai emulator runs more games at fullspeed than mGBA on a new 3DS. (Most games playable on the latter with 1 frameskip I.E. 30 FPS). PSP also has more pixels to work with if you want to upscale the GBA's 160p.

Neo-Geo core on Retroarch actually runs perfectly on New 3DS. You can even crank it up to 150% CPU speed to cut down on lag in Metal Slug and the like.

Both consoles can run most 8-bit things (including turbografx/PCE) about perfectly I think.

yo you said there are crt tv, if you have a wii you can hook it up to that. Theres lots of wii emulators, and a wii is much easier to hack than a 3ds. follow https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/ and youre set, a wii is also cheaper than a 3ds or psp. youll also want a gamecube controller + extender. Still cheaper than a 3ds

having both a vita and a 3ds I don't run any emulators on the vita not even in psp mode because virtual consoles just work so much better I mean on 3ds alone you have VC for gameboy/gameboy color/game gear/nes/snes/ T16-PCE/sega genesis and maybe some others I might be forgetting and then you have NDS and GBA which are both run via hardware instead of being emulated BUT if you want to play psx or ps1 games the vita plays them both via hardware instead of emulating them so that would be your best choice for them

Ah crap I never thought of that! hope they don't mind me taking the extra plug cause that's def going in the bag now. still will want a portable option for the first week since I'm told i'm not getting up anytime soon after surgery but once I can sit up the wii will def be my main go to.

There so much stuff on both 3DS and PSP that I personally wouldn’t even resort to homebrew emulation but just official VC + injects, to get the best performance from both..

PSP: psp games + official psone classics + psone eboot injects
2DS XL: 3DS games + official VC + VC injects

It sounds like you don’t own any of the two so you have plenty of native RPGs to play before going retro...
3DS has cheaper storage and on demand untethered downloads (freeshop) if you got wifi or cellphone hotspot in the hospital...
2DS XL is 80% the weight of new 3DS XL if you need to hold it in bed for long periods and you’re weak or in pain..

And that’s not even mentioning the huge DS backward compatibility...

pretty much everything except PSX emulation is better in the 3DS, specially the new 3DS, PSP struggles to run super FX games on SNES at a good framerate, the 3DS has bearly any issue and the new 3DS is perfect, GBA is also miles better on 3DS, PSP does well, but graphical inaccuracies and games that are incompatible arent rare, as opposed to the 3DS, that provides the same emulation solutions that the PSP had plus super accurate emulation using mGBA (which isnt as polished but the games it does run well it runs perfectly but also uses a ton more power, therefore requiring a new 3DS to run well) or partial emulation, since a chunk of the GBA is already one every 3DS model, so using a VC injector leads to games pretty much running flawlessly (with a few exceptions such as games that need special carts and stuff)

Lots of great RPGs on the PS1 though OP, and some crackers on the PSP itself.. and while it doesn't run them as well as the 3DS, you'll find the PSP can run most SNES RPGs well enough. Then again, can you pass up the chance to play Dragon Quest VIII on the 3DS?

Either machine will keep you entertained: if SNES is the focus and you're really not arsed about PSX, then yeah, 3DS. Otherwise I'd plump for a PSP.

Wii emulators that output true 240p = god on CRT. One of the best devices for that scenario.

You might be able to get by the first week with your android? phone in the meantime. At least turn-based games can be passable with virtual buttons.

If you wanna do double duty (mobile and then CRT tv) and make it all about the ps1 (surely more games than you can handle), you could go
- PSP Go + microSD adapter mod + 200GB microSD
- PSP Go cradle + composite video out cable (I suppose CRTs in an hospital lack component)
- PSone classics + injected PSone eboots from ready to play collections you see in some places
- a genuine dualshock3 in a cool color

Can’t skip Ps1 if you like rpgs..

I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though

    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea

even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
