So I mentioned the other day on my profile status, that I was thinking about making a GBAtemp text adventure as a few of my projects have come to a close or have been put on the back burner at least for a little while. After all GBAtemp really does go a long way to keeping me sane, I thought I would give something back.

So I'm throwing open the doors at this early stage of development to see what you would like see, any sort of suggestions that you have, hell even if you would like to appear in it ( cannot promise that if you ask to be in it you will be in it but it all depends on demand )

So far I have a good idea about the path the story will take, the main problem is what format it will take we have 2 choices.

We can go for a full on text adventure like Zork, this is the long route and will take the longest time in development

OR

We can do more of a choose your own adventure type of game but with random events and lite RPG elements

The story of both will be broadly the same just the way things unfold will change.

The idea is you will explore and area bumping in to familiar faces and trying to figure out how you got there and how to escape

This thread really is to gage interest and really just to see if this is the sort of thing that the members of 'temp would like to play

Definitely the second one.

My sisters had told me to do a game kind of like this, but with a dating tematic and I'm interested in that idea.
It'd be nice if you could make a game with different endings depending on the route choosen by the player. The route, per se is given by the choices made by the player itself.

I think it'd be boring if every player has the same ending, that's why the second idea seems more versatile and interesting.

I vote for full text adventure.

Uiaad if you go for full text adventure you should use Inform. It makes it 1 billion times easier to make text adventures compared to other programming languages.
At first that engine looked real interesting but needing to write full sentences to get the code to do stuff sounds like a time suck programming nightmare. Sometimes it's better to just learn the skill rather than the skill being intuitive and easily accessible. I shudder at writing a huge project with natural sentences.

You are in your Bedroom and sleep peaceful next to your Wife.
All is calm.....suddenly........a Cry from the Child´s Room......

Next>
1 - Turn around and go back to sleep
2 - Wake your wife and tell her to have a look
3 - Stand up and have a look for yourself

>3

You leave your Bed and head to the Bed Rooms Door.
Unfortunately, you forgot that you built Paris out of Lego with your Child. You stumble across the Eiffel Tower, fall down the stairs of the Arc de Triomphe and die .....

:D

Definitely <Choose your own adventure style game with some lite RPG elements and random events>

Dating thematic? Erm...did your sisters told you this when the idea of a gbatemp game was brought up, or was that before?

Because...I'm not really sure how high it would score on the awkward scale, but I would suspect...a lot.

...

Okay, okay: I would suspect it'd be something like this:
Game: You are currently in the chatroom. It is a nice, relaxing atmosphere where people are sitting around talking or hanging around. Some are attempting to hack consoles or video systems. Many are playing video games. In fact, the walls largely consist of huge monitors portraying these video games. How do you proceed?
1. attempt to flatter Costello
2. [+3 charisma level] attempt to charm Chary
3. buy Tempy a beer
4. grab a controller and play a game
5. leave
...I'll leave myself out.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
