Let me be the first one who starts the "is it safe to update" threads by saying, that it's not safe right now.
As we all know (or should know) 6.2.0 update just got released and it changes how the keys are generated. What does this mean for the end-user? That no CFW currently works on 6.2.0.

6.2.0 confusion explained

Is it still possible to do NAND backup at least? I'm at 6.2 and use SX OS with CFW (No emuNAND)

Remember when these same people said 5.0+ was unhackable right before the RCM exploit was released?

Why do you trust them?
Because the same people (I am picking sciresm, who knew about RCM exploit) never said that (or if he did, he did not wanted to show he knows about working exploit).

Exactly, they're not trustworthy, they lie. "it's unhackable" today becomes "anyone can hack it" tomorrow.
They lie, cause they want the exploits to stay unpatched for as long as possible. Would you rather tell everyone about your amazing exploit, which means that ninty would know and they can patch it or wait for as many switches to be affected by it so that more people can use it once it is released?
And nobody says that 6.2.0 is unhackable. Everything will eventually get hacked.

You are right and to be honest if we'll have to go to play cat 'n mouse play exploit -> patch -> exploit -> patch. It's not a good time to release any exploit, because we don't have even ONE game which needs 6.2 update. So it would be wise to release it after a more 6.2 games going to be released.

That's the problem with deja vu and jamais vu. They are waiting for Ninty to patch it, but ninty does not know about it. But if they release it, ninty would patch it and we would lose some parts of an exploit (which still work).

I don't understand what you're saying...
The way you worded it made it sound like you were saying its bad that the update didn’t brick systems

“They're not bricking the console, though. That's the worst part. The console can still be used, but many of it features will become unavailable. The salt on the wound.”

Jamais Vu has been patched for ages, and was also released ages ago

The number of games that a firmware has, has absolutely no impact on when an exploit is released kek

Where did you get the idea that you don't have to update to play higher firmware games? If the games require a higher fw that has new master keys, then this cannot be bypassed.

Exactly, and because we don't have 6.2 keys we can't actually bypass update. He is thinking about Tinfoil bypass but it's relying on master keys from required software and we simply don't have it for 6.2.

Kinda what I meant by them changing something that would make the game not work. So guessing what they've done will cause any game that requires 6.2 onwards to no longer work on older firmware? Guess I might have to wait longer to play Smash Bros then...

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

How do you bypass having to update? I couldn’t get Civ VI to work on 6.0.1 and ended up updating to 6.1.

Tinfoil can bypass it during the installation of an NSP and it just works... From what's been said above though sounds like games from probably Smash Bros onwards might not work this way...

Um no? I clearly state that they aren't bricking the system because what they are doing in terms of law is not a brick, with that being the most challenging aspect of the issue as it absolves them of any legal action from afflicted users.

so i have a question, how exactly does this affect future games and something like tinfoil? im aware (currently) tinfoil allows a FW bypass but would that be something affected by the key change?

I have little knowledge about this but a master key is required so unless the master key is somehow obtained it is impossible. I wouldn't say 6.2 will be unhackable forever and the key will likely be cracked or something eventually there just isn't an estimated timescale so people as always are losing it.

I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
