Come to think of it, when we need the exploit, pictures would be ripe for the harvesting, so to speak.
They contain many variables to be read by the DSi. We can only hope that there is a flaw in the renderer though

You need the exploit first.

What we should probably do is get chips (when and if they come out) and install them in our DSi's then start on this homebrew channel. Then once an exploit is found we could release a beta of some sort.

Something interesting I noticed when I was looking at a picture taken by the dsi camera in a hex editor. I was looking at the hex codes (or whatever they're called, remember I'm not really that good with this stuff) of 2 pictures I took, and noticed that they where identical till I got to the offset 00000490, and they started changing at 000004A0

So I think that it might be possible to edit a picture to be viewed on the dsi (I tried dumping up to that point and inserting it onto another picture, but it didn't work, I honestly wasn't expecting it to, I think that damages part of the image) So if there was a way to put it in exactly right, we could probably view our own images on our DSis

I know it doesn't necessarily relate to hacking the dsi, I just thought that it would be neat to share, plus, who knows, it may lead to a tiff exploit, like what happened to the psp with gripshift, lumines, gta, etc.

WTF? a tiff hack has nothing to do with gripshift, lumines or gta. those where seperate, completely unrelated exploits. there is no way the dsi could view a tiff as far as i know, so this cant lead to a tiff hack. perhaps an exploit in the jpg, but not in tiff. i'm guessing you dont know what you're talking about. (tbh, i dont really either, but it seems i know more than you.

Well, I'll be... Your right about that little bit. And your also right about gripshift, lumines, and gta, those where done editing the savegames, I'm actually not sure why I even mentioned that on account that I have used most of them and read about them.

At any rate, you are right that the dsi can't read .tif, .tif files do have similar encoding to jpeg files. For instance, if you try to download this image: http://miltonmoon.com/gallery/d/622-2/Tiff.tif it won't say "Tiff Image" as it's file type, it will instead say, "Jpeg Image" as the type, even thought it doesn't have the jpg extension, meaning that some tinkering could be done to it. It might me possible to just use a .jpg, but I'm not sure since all of the image exploits that I've seen where done using .tif files:

http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/5-03-tiff-hell...rld-197302.html

Of course there's also the savegames, which we should eventually be able to do

JPG files contain a header with a bunch of information, that's why you're seeing each one with identical info at the beginning. The DSi's photos are all at the same res using the same palette and each one is an identical file size. It won't be until the actual picture part of the file that the information becomes different.

Well, as I said, I don't know much about this stuff, so I figured the dsi looks for something in the header, but I guess that I was wrong

That's why I'm saying that everyone involved in this should do a whole heap of reading and studying first. Then the things you try will become educated guessing instead of just blind guessing.

Come to think of it, I think that everybody is trying to go at this the wrong way. What we should do is first find an exploit to allow us to launch ds homebrew (in other words, not using native mode, kind of like the flash carts) off the sd card, than possibly find a way to make a homebrew that will write files to the system and then maybe allow us to get a closer look at the firmware to help us crack it. It's worth a try I think

Oh ok. Lets just do that.
*magic*
Done!

I never said it would be easy, I just said that it might allow us to get a better look at the firmware

Don't worry about his comment, yours was the best and most logical idea I've seen in the thread so far. First find and exploit and then see what you can do with it, that's how it works.

Thanks

Now if only I knew about exploiting, I get how most of the exploits work, the problem is that I don't know how to reproduce them

Then that's your next step. Until you can reproduce one that's already documented you won't be able create an entirely new one.

edit : Read bushings post earlier in the thread to see how long it took them to come up with the one for the Wii, it'll give you an idea of how long it took people with experience to do it. You still need to learn the basics so it'll take even longer. Don't let it discourage you, you're learning something new which is always good but it'll give you an idea of how hard it's going to be.

Well, I highly doubt that I would be ANY contribution to the exploit, however, has anybody talked to the guys who made all the wii exploits, like the guys who made the twilight hack. Has anybody asked them what they found in the zelda saves cause the exploit, and what about those guys who found the exploit without using zelda

If the dsi and wii have as much in common as people say they do, then this should come around at least a little quicker than the zelda exploit did

That's bushing you're talking about (the twilight hack), he posted just a couple of pages back and there's a link to his blog in his post. His blog contains quite alot of useful info.

edit: He also did a talk at a conference about hacking recently, if you look around you might be able to find video caps of it somewhere.

You should really look at the twilight hack exploit. Bushing and co released full docs on it, or at least how it worked. Cant remember the link though

We can't do anything like this at least until DSi only games come out... or do DSiWare saves save into the SD card and can be transferred?
