Do these petitions ever work? I signed this one http://www.change.org/petitions/dai...orks-develop-guilty-gear-xrd-sign-on-the-wiiu to get Guilty Gear Xrd for Wii U. Even sent Arc System Works an email and harassed them on Twitter. How many supporters in a petition would be needed to get the attention of a big game company like Arc System Works, or in this case Squeenix?

Also, don't get me wrong, but even though I'm a big fan of Akira Toriyama and love the art style of Draqon Quest, I just don't understand its appeal. Here's a good take on what DQ X is like for a Western gamer: http://wiiudaily.com/2014/05/dragon-quest-x-preview/. Doesn't sound very enticing after reading that and watching videos on YouTube. Japanese gamers are an interesting bunch, they don't seem to mind excessive grinding and slow battles. Would I like to have this game for Wii U in Europe and the US? Most definitely. Would it be received as positively in the West as it is in the East? You be the judge, I'm waging a localized port is going to make zero profits to Squeenix because Western gamers are accustomed to (MMO)RPG games that are very different in gameplay mechanics to DQ X.

DQ 10? Yeah, that's not coming over. It's an MMO released on the Wii, a bad choice, the Wii U, a worse choice, and it came out on the PC to try to recoup some of the losses. They even brought the game to Android. They are obviously desperate. We'll be lucky to see it at all, as I'm sure they can't at all justify the costs of localizing. DQ 10 was a mistake. A bad one. I doubt they will ever venture down that path with DQ ever again. They tried to pull an FF 11 with it, and all we saw was that there wasn't enough lore and other material, much less interest necessary to turn the DQ series into another SE MMO.

As for DQ 7, I honestly don't know why they haven't announced anything yet, but I'm sure it will come over eventually. We saw just how long they can take to bring these games over when they redid 4, 5, and 6 on the DS. There was no small wait for an announcement, and the wait certainly wasn't made easier when they took their sweet, sweet time translating the games.

Basically, I wouldn't count out DQ 7 coming over, but DQ 10 is a lost cause. I'm sure SE would like to think that it doesn't exist.

I would love to see some sources cited for the assertions made in this comment, but since you haven't brought any, I pulled some for clarity's sake:

*DQX, on Wii alone, vastly outsold FFXI on PS2.
*FFXI was ported to PC and 360 which, by the logic outlined in your comment, means SE was desperate, and that FFXI was a massive failure, but if we count them, scraped together about a million units sold, total, which, oddly enough, is the number of units sold on Wii/U combined for DQX, not including PC or Android, and FFXI benefited from actually being released in NA and Europe, unlike DQX, which had to make due with Japan/Asia.
*FFXI, on much, much smaller per unit sales than the average FF, wound up as the most profitable FF, ever. (Which is why, even though it 'only' did about as well as DQX, overall, there's a sequel in the form of FFXIV, a game they basically made twice because there was so much potential money on the table.)

(And for a game that's a total hellish flop, they keep doing regular content updates, which would seem to fly in the face of the assertion it was a massive mistake.)

All that said, I think the ship on DQX has sailed for anyone outside Asia/Japan, but it certainly isn't for the reasons outlined by Nathan Drake, and probably has as much to do w/ there being virtually no market on consoles for sub-based MMOs outside of Japan anymore, FFXIV being, perhaps, the one exception, though I think the jury is still out on that one.

*And before anyone starts in with "hur, hur, VGChartz", compiling numbers from Media Create et al is something a chimp could do, which makes those numbers pretty damn reliable.

1. The PS2 was a piss poor choice for an MMO as well. Saying that anything outsold the only MMO that tried to make a name for itself on the PS2 is not exactly impressive.

2. Fun fact: The PC version of FF XI actually came to the West before the PS2 version, which might help in explaining another reason why the PS2 version of the game underperformed. The PC version also initially released only six months after the release of the PS2 version in Japan. No matter how you look at it, the PC was more the intended platform with the PS2 just kind of being a bonus. The 360 release was more of a cash grab for an established MMO that was actually fairing decently by that point. I don't need to look up numbers though to know that an MMORPG based on a JRPG series probably didn't sell all that well on the 360.

3. Ever heard of microtransactions and subscription costs? Funny thing about them is that, even when looking at a game like World of Warcraft that has lost a substantial number of players over the past few years, these extra costs reap in an absolute mountain of profit. $20 for a new mount here, $10 for a new customization option there, and the money just keeps rolling in. Honestly, citing a successful MMO has being highly profitable, especially one that works on a subscription model, is a pretty "no duh" thing.

4. They promised to support the game with regular content updates for a long while. I actually posted a news article about it, I dunno, before the game released initially I guess. If they didn't follow through there, nobody would play their game. Seriously. Acting like they are just being good developers is silly. They're meeting an obligation as the developer of an MMO.

Regardless, by the time you're releasing your game on Android, clearly some kind of desperation has set in if being released on two home consoles and the PC still isn't enough to get all of the profit they need to make the game worthwhile. I know the mobile phone market in Japan is huge, but let's face it, porting a whole MMO to something with hardware inferior to even the Wii shows that they are really hoping to tap this last available market in Japan to make some money. The way that they've ignored mentioning the game for a Western release tells me they think it would crash and burn here, which also means they aren't comfortable enough with the sales being made in Japan to even try to bring it over.

All in all, as far as MMOs go, DQ 10 is a flop. Without a doubt, it is not what the developers were hoping it would be. Acting like it's on the level of success of the big MMOs is just silly. It probably doesn't help that even in Japan, DQ isn't one of the more popular game series. Honestly, we've been lucky to keep seeing DQ games localized in the west at all.
