Verbatim DataLifePlus can be ordered new. But are those not AZO discs with a blue surface? I have a couple of them left, but those are more difficult to read on the PS1. Even burned with a good burner they stutter more then most cheap brands.

The ATIP from those are the same as the DataLifePlus in the guide:
Code:
ATIP info from disk:
  Indicated writing power: 4
  Is not unrestricted
  Is not erasable
Disk sub type: Medium Type A, high Beta category (A+) (3)
ATIP start of lead in: -11077 (97:34/23)
ATIP start of lead out: 359848 (79:59/73)
Disk type: Long strategy type (Cyanine, AZO or similar)
Manuf. index: 11
Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
Should I try one of these in the Plextor on 1x or 4x?

I'll try to get the TDK's from the thrift store tomorrow.

According to the list Traxdata is mid... maybe I still have a 5-pack of them left.

Philips is on the good list, but all the 48x and 52x Philips I used are Ritek.
I figured they be better then cheaper media, if you have some laying around it could be interesting. I think they can't be burned lower then 8x though, I'm pretty sure they just don't work (the older original AZO ones from the 90s have the opposite problem). Could be misremembering that. The old 90s DataLifePlus 74 minutes for sure don't work past 8x. That's why they had to change the dye formulation.

Looks like Phillips at some point cheaped out and switched from one of the best manufacturers to one of the worst for those sweet savings $$$... It's really important what the manufacturer is listed in the ATIP for sure to catch things like you did there. The supported burn speed can help date a CD-R as well. If you start seeing things like 8x compatible on the CD-R you know it's probably good.

I burned a Verbatim DataLifePlus/AZO disc at 4x. The 8x was not possible, the selectable speeds with the Plextor was only 1x, 4x, 12x and 20x.

The intro FMV of Driver stutters just like the CMC burned at 4x :( Maybe it's a little bit better but not significant. And the disc has a verification error at 73% on a .XA file. So it´s a coaster anyway.

Try writing the discs at slower speeds at either 1 or 4x speed. That's one of the recommended speeds to write a CD-R disc.

Are verbatim DataLifePlus available?
The ones with AZO cyanine dye? Anything else from Verbatim are rebadged CMC discs (not pro).

It's a AZO cyanine. I already wrote them at a 4x low speed in the Plextor resulting in the choppy FMV and verification error/coaster :(

I still have the experience that those AZO cyanine discs are more difficult to read then cheap Sony or CMC discs burned using a same good burner.

At a thrift store I found 3 different TDK's. It looks like two types are good ones, these should be saved for good games. And one type is crap.

From the left one there where only 2 of them, I took them both and they turned out to be Mitsui's.
Code:
ATIP info from disk:
Indicated writing power: 4
Is not unrestricted
Is not erasable
Disk sub type: Medium Type C, low Beta category (C-) (6)
ATIP start of lead in: -11567 (97:27/58)
ATIP start of lead out: 359849 (79:59/74)
Disk type: Short strategy type (Phthalocyanine or similar)
Manuf. index: 12
Manufacturer: Mitsui Chemicals, Inc.

The middle ones have a TDK media code. I didn't know if it was good ones so I left 2 or 3 of them in the store.
Code:
ATIP info from disk:
Indicated writing power: 5
Is not unrestricted
Is not erasable
Disk sub type: Medium Type B, low Beta category (B-) (4)
ATIP start of lead in: -12520 (97:15/05)
ATIP start of lead out: 359849 (79:59/74)
Disk type: Short strategy type (Phthalocyanine or similar)
Manuf. index: 26
Manufacturer: TDK Corporation

And the right one I only took one and left the rest because I was afraid it's Moser Baer crap which the PS1 really didn't like. The back said "(c) 2010 Made in India". And I was right... Moser Baer... :shit:
Code:

ATIP start of lead in: -12369 (97:17/06)

Disk type: Short strategy type (Phthalocyanine or similar)
Manuf. index: 69
Manufacturer: Moser Baer India Limited

There is also a Traxdata and a Maxell which are Ritek's and a Emtec which is a CMC.

Hey guys, I'm testing out a few drives at the moment to see how good they are. Apart from the Physical tests i.e testing if the FMV jumps and burning at x1, x4 or max, what other tests can I do on the computer to see how good it is? Thanks

FYI I burned some old 1-4x media in a newer sata H&L burner, and while the disc was recognized and burned, it was not readable in any drive afterward. Unfortunately my burners' slowest CD burn speed is 12x.

Where can I buy CMC Pro cds in Europe? I can only find UK sellers from ebay and the shipping costs are absurd (plus custom fees)...

Or when your player dies, you can say in code, if enemy exists, do nothing, but if enemy does not exist, then create enemy at certain spot. (This would be a pain tho for lots of emeies)
