Hello,
End 2016 I modified my 3ds with a9lh and was up to date with the latest firmware.
It works smooth as butter, I got 3ds games which I converted to CIA with a converter tool and installed them with FBI.

This year I gathered some new 3ds games with wii u usb helper.
Now I'm confused, because I was up to date with the 2016 developments and now it's a bit different and I have 2 questions:

1: wii U usb helper doesn't download 3ds files which I could convert to CIA, but *.app and *.tik files. It took me a while how to convert the 3ds files with the xorpads and all that. How can I change the *.app and *.tik to cia files for installing?

2: What happens when I install a cia which requires a higher firmware from 2017? Can it screw up my cfw 3ds? Could it for example install a higher firmware and destroy the a9lh?

Sorry for the noob questions, the developments are really fast the last years for the 3ds and thanks for the answers!

First, I suggest you to follow this guide to update your 3ds from A9LH to B9S: https://3ds.guide/a9lh-to-b9s so you can safely update to the latest firmware and keep Luma3DS updated (and also solve your problem number 2)
As for the first question, if I remember correctly, you can right click on a downloaded game in Wii U USB Helper and select an option to repack it to a .CIA file. I don't remember the exact option because I'm not at home right now, but it should have that option

I've never used Wii U USB Helper for 3DS games, so I'm not sure how it works.
But wouldn't it be easier to use FreeShop? That way you can download and install the games directly on the 3DS without needing to download it on PC first, convert it to CIA, transfer to the 3DS and install.
It's probably faster as well. It's a bit slower than installing a CIA from the SD card (maybe 20% slower IIRC), but it's downloading and installing at the same time, so you don't have to wait for the download/transfer to SD.

Thanks for the replies! The suggestion for rightclicking a game inside wii u helper gives indeed a lot of options, plus converting to CIA :)
I'll try the online Freeshop when I will install B9S and updated my firmware.
But I want to wait with the Freeshop for the moment, I'm not sure if I go online now with the old firmware if it accidentally updates and will screw up something. I read some other messages the old a9lh conflicts a bit with the newest firmware.
So making a CIA with the wii u helper is easy for now.

Does anybody know what will happen if I install a CIA which is supposed to run on a higher firmware?

Nothing bad will happen if you update now, except maybe getting a black screen on boot (if your version is older than 6.6 I think). If that happens just download arm9loaderhax.bin from Luma 7.0.5 and replace the one on your SD card (get it from https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/releases) and that will fix it. You could update to B9S at a later time. Running freeShop likewise won't hurt anything.

For your question, it will install fine except when you try to play it it will loop on the "Nintendo 3DS" red and black screen forever until you shut down your console.
