Been thinking about getting a camera doorbell, but the wired Ring Doorbell needs to be connected to be charged (logically, yes) and the wireless costs nearly as much as a CCTV package (w/2 cameras & 1TB).

Plus, Ring requires a paid subscription? A CCTV system records it and then overwrites it after time.

That it? I've got experience with CCTV system and installing the cameras although I'm curious about camera doorbell since a lot use it.

Both have advantages and downsides. Personally, I think a CCTV system is only as good as the money you're willing to put into it. Of course you can go and buy a system with a few cameras for about $100, but it'll look like cheap cameras from China (Speaking from personal experience, they're horrible). And by the time you get into the better looking systems where you can actually make out a face from more than 5 metres away, you probably have to pay for some subscription service, similar to Ring.

So I think the better question is are you fine with the camera being only from your doorway or do you want to spend even more getting actually half decent cameras set up in multiple locations, possibly being more hidden too if your state/country allows it.

(There obviously are ways to make stuff cheaper but I'm talking about systems that are basically plug in and they work.)

I've been using a cctv system for a couple of years now. It's working great. Mine can run upto 8 cameras simultaneously. I have 2 at the front to the house and 2 in the back.

Honestly it's easy to set up and use. I went with a wired system over wireless cause I would still have to drill holes for power for the wireless camera's and wired was cheaper. I was thinking about getting a ring system, but I didn't want to pay a subscription for a doorbell.

I have the Ring 2 wireless rechargeable doorbell, It’s good but delayed between the person pressing the button and me getting the notification. The app for it is terrible too, but oddly the third party app “rapid ring” is way better than the official. I’ve heard you can set up a private server to capture video and images, so I haven’t paid for subscriptions, but I still haven’t set up the server either… I just use it for personal surveillance and answering the door. I would recommend a camera system over the doorbells though, for proper security.

Also my experience, by the time it notifies me that it detected movement the person can already be gone

Ubiquiti has a doorbell that doesn't need a paid subscription. https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi-protect-cameras/products/uvc-g4-doorbell
I hate monthly subscriptions.

I, for example, put a video intercom paxton access, so before that I had my surveillance camera stolen twice.
So my preference falls more on the door system, and what you choose - your business)
I know a very large number of cases of theft of security cameras, many of my acquaintances told me how it was.
So I decided and myself and my parents to put a video intercom, as for me it would be difficult to steal in any way)
Yes, and more convenient, you can immediately calculate the thief).
Especially now with such technology, thank God)

I have the ring 2 and needing subscription for it is def a negative and also it is battery operated even though it is hooked to doorbell transformer which just recharges the battery to run the device. So if u have it set up to catch a lot of motion or if have a wintertime where it is cold out then you will have a near dead battery often and lose function until it charges back up and it is such a slow trickle charge. I think there are metal enclosures you can mount cameras in to protect them from being stolen as easily if go with a camera/dvr combo which at some point I’m gonna go that route. I have a Feit spotlight camera and a doorbell that gonna put in place of the ring and see how it does. The spotlight is ok but don’t expect good detail at a distance. Feit is a non subscription device and loop records to micro sd card and can stream to phone app and record onto phone

Camera system is more expansive, can be upgraded over time, does not typically need a subscription and can do far more than a doorbell can in terms of detection software can present.

Also while it may or may not matter to you, Ring is allowed to share its data to third parties if they want/request it. Some people have problems with that.

I bought a camera doorbell (XTU J7 w/Chime) at a good price and it has the features I'd want from the Ring without paying nearly $100.

Just need to buy one of those door mount anti-theft because placing it outside as is is not a good idea. Folks have had their Ring doorbells stolen as they did just that.
