Hacking Can someone recommend an easy way to short pin 10 without taking apart the joycon?

might be easy but fof also said something along the lines of triggering rcm mode by being in homebrew already
so if there is a cfw, you would only need to short it once

If we can still use the JoyCon normally while the pins are in bent position, is there any particular need to use a switch or other such device to 'unshort' the pins?
that is like having the home button activated all the time
than how would you adapt the joycon back in the switch?


really the joycon does not need to be modded at all
just stick a wire in it or the switch to activate alternate home button

In my understanding kernelhax is needed, or modified and signed later stage boot loader Package1ldr which I believe can be detected by Horizon when modified.

well it can be that once cfw is installed, homebrew can be accessed to bring the switch in rcm mode if needed

Well... Considering you will have to trigger RCM x-Many times in the future there is a risk that you will end up with broken/bent PIN's on Switch rail, and then it will be more expensive to repair. When you mod your JoyCon permamently by soldering wire/bent pins/solder blob on pins - JoyCon will be working fine however you will not be able to use it in handheld mode. Some games require JoyCons in handheld mode to start not to mention that when you do Factory Reset on Switch to go past Initial Setup screen you have to put two JoyCons in rails as in handheld mode.

Without PIN shorted:

Can confirm this is the best route to take


I strongly urge people not to perform the bend pin trick on the joycon as it is not sustainable for daily use. I was able to move pin 9 over to pin 10, but as the joycon attaches after a few times it begins to bend the pin back. I tried various methods to bend the pin back which allowed the exploit to work again; however, after this occurring several times, eventually the joint weakened and came off.

I'm picking up another Joycon and I'll be solder bridging the new one internally, and using it as a spare wireless controller / exploit controller.

EDIT: If anyone is wondering what the worse case scenario is when you lose / bridge pin 9 and 10, the switch just doesn't detect the joycons as being attached; however, it does register as charging.

My point exactly lol glad you put that pic up

Considering that spare JoyCon rail currently cost 1/3 of whole new JoyCon on eBay it's not very reasonable. Also, you're not damaging you're JoyCon by modding unless you know what you're doing. You can always add some sort of microswitch to console in elegant way to trigger RCM.

What will be the path to execute CFW then ? Dual NAND solution on custom PCB by TX ? Or you're talking about getting rid of OFW and install CFW on top of it ?

You can't. However this comment was related to the other post where user said there is no need to mod JoyCon to trigger RCM. Whenever people will use paperclips, screws, screwdrivers and weird things to shorten the PIN's on rail they might finally end up breaking them.

That is a super easy mod I did inside my JoyCon. For some reason PIN 9 & 10 wasn't working for me so I used PIN 10 & 1 as f0f recommends. Then soldered micro 32AWG wires to ribbon part of JoyCon connector to 2 position switch, and cut small hole using xacto knife in JoyCon enclosure. My JoyCon is fully functional and whenever I have to trigger RCM I just change switch position on the side of my JoyCon.
The switch isn't really needed. The joycon works fine with the short in place, just don't hold volume up when powering on for normal use.

It depends technically 3.0 users can get homebrew without cfw
If homebrew witout cfw is achieved than homebrew can enable rcm mode

This way I am sure I do not take apart my sweet joycon I use for mario kart eheh :D

You (arguably, or at least partly) use the word homebrew incorrectly.

Your logic is faulty.

You give tips, that won' work.

Here is the logic loaddown for you.

CFW sits above the exploit layer as in "it gets loaded by an exploit". So it cant induce an exploit, without being loaded by an exploit. "But once it runs it can trigger exploit!" "Yes - and for it to run it needs to be launched by an exploit". Catch 22 ey?

So heres where we are "hardware assisted wise" - without talking about "modchips" - yet.

The pin shortening > boot to RCM thing has to be done on every (cold) boot.

Until someone does a still non existant kernel hack (people seem to be working on) to make it possible to trigger the exploit from just booting into RCM, you ALSO will need a powered device "talking" to the Switch over USB to trigger the exploit - to then launch into CFW.

We don't have Nintendos CFW signature keys - so we cant make CFW "look like" an official update, that you could just install over OFW, and make the Switch load it on boot, without exploiting the Switch first. After every boot.

RCM is the usb recovery menu - booting into it alone right now does nothing, you still need to exploit the device by talking to it via usb. Automating that step, so it can be done by the switch "alone" after you've talked to it via usb ONCE isn't trivial (where do you store this data that has to survive reboot (remember, this is before the OS (CFW) is loaded) - and also doesnt exist currently. although people say that they are working on it.

Not if you are gentle with it I do not make any pressure it just fit right.
Trust me I take really really care of the switch to the point to not unscrew a screw cause it will remove the black paint of it.
There it just goes it make that minimum required contact I think even the joycon itself make harder contact
Here you do not see in the picture but these tools are really tiny it is a spike I use for mobile repair ^^

Other people copying it might not be as careful though, but I guess that's their responsibility. I do a similar method but I'm thinking of just opening up the joycon and soldering the 2 points instead.

Maybe not. But as I said, JoyCon works fine but it's detected as bluetooth not handheld mode. Which means it's not working 100% fine. Whenever you'll be asked to put your modded joycon into handheld mode it won't detect it. You will not be able to play some games which require joycon in handhled mode and you will not be able to use that joycon to pass through Switch Initial Setup screen as it *require* joycon in handheld mode inserted in rail. Also, at some point Nintendo can modify their firmware to detect if non existent "home button" is pressed while Switch is running and then they might flag you or even ban your console as it's not possible to hit that non existent button in any other way than shorten the PIN.

So I would say, any kind of switch is highly recommended if you want to have fully functional joycon and not get detected by Nintendo in the future.

Unless the time comes when you will have to take apart your Switch instead of the JoyCon and repair the rail :D Also seems like this angle and size of the screwdriver shorten more than just two pins together. If you'll lucky enough you don't fry your Switch doing that :>
