"I paid full price for a product and then something cheaper came out. I'm going to go rally some dudes on the internet to boycott these cheaper clones!"

Seriously, the amount of fanboyism going around is too much. All of these companies' products are used for illegal purposes, so there will not be legal action unless you want to get out laughed out of a courtroom. Only thing that will happen is people will complain.

another moron totally missing the point. the boycott is to support gateway, which are the only ones working on the flashcards: making them more reliable, adding features, etc. the cloners don't contribute anything, they just steal the work done by gateway team.

nothing fanboyish about it. no one is talking about legal action either, why the hell are you dragging that into it?

Calm your tits fanboy. Gateway won't be the only cart on market. Deal with it.

Regardless of them having competition in the flashcard business, they actually (maybe unintentionally) contributed to all 3DS owners who are waiting for homebrew keeping their consoles on 4.5 by releasing the emuNAND feature (finally to the public) without restrictions, so they deserve some credit.

a. Legal action is the only way you'll ever get anyone to stop making "clones"

b. Do you also advocate removing Samsung and other smartphone companies besides Apple from the market? I mean, Apple did it first and all. They should automatically put a block on the market.

Clones will always happen, get over it. It's been happening since the original R4 cart. Notice how all DS flashcarts now have all based their work on the original R4, the first card? As Dezmen said, there is no way Gateway will be the only chip on the market. If Gateway is truly superior, people will not buy the clones. Lower prices drive competition - it's better for the consumer in the long run.

The issue is that with "legit" technology there are laws against just blatantly copying hardware/software and reselling it cheaper... there is not much Gateway can do about people just totally ripping off their design and there would not be any clones WITHOUT Gateway. I am not trying to be a fanboy, I am just looking at this logically.

I think there is this "go against the popular opinion" religion that a lot of people follow. They think it's "lame" to like the more popular thing. What it boils down to is that if everyone buys clones, Gateway may quit supporting their card. Since R4 is obviously just ripping off of Gateway, that means no more support from the clones.

Without Gateway, there would be no clones

it's only better for the consumer when the situation is such that intellectual property is protected, so that investments in research and development pay off for producers. this isn't the case here, that's the whole point. how dumb are you exactly?

This is funny because

1. Apple has copied almost every single piece of technology they have ever made... and
2. Your argument is completely irrelevant to what everyone is talking about.
Rly.

If you people have huge butthurt that makes impossible to sit - go sue R4i. Oh wait. You can't do that. Then forget and play your 3DS like you did before.

what he probably means by apple is that apple became the first mp3 player success and pretty much still is. they copied someone else's idea. going back to their PC inventions is another story as well... but I don't need to regurgitate (Xerox, mouse, o/s, etc etc) but let's not turn this into a thread about Xerox versus Microsoft versus apple, it is old boring rehashed too many times and nobody cares :)

At least I see some intelligence in this thread, that people know that all of these counterfeit and it doesn't matter which goes where and does what. it is all the same. But to support gateway 100% is also to stab Nintendo in the back am I right.

About the debate on smartphones, companies are just copying ideas of each other, which is not the case of R4i.

Without iPhone 2G there would be no Galaxy S4. So?

yes, and Apple has sued Samsung for patent infringement and won, multiple times.

clearly, Gateway cannot do the same to R4i, due to the dubious legality of their product.

see the problem with clones now? and why the usual mechanics don't work for the betterment of the consumer here?

you act like boycotting is some kind of socialist concept?

it's one of the defining hallmarks of capitalism, the power of the consumer to vote with his wallet.

I consider the Gateway the 'name brand'. and the R4 Gold Deluxe to be the 'generic'. If people didn't buy it, It would sort of be like boycotting a generic cereal because it copied Fruity Pebbles. I love my Gateway and support them all the way, but boycotting one generic without boycotting them all is just a reflection of how badly your butt hurts.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
